… 3 corners, 1 full room: Diversity wins!

From the outset this was a wee bit a strange mixture: Local support, best in class. Often outshining the main act. American all-time favorites and heroes, but being confined to smaller and smaller venues. And then English loudmouth lads, offensive and … let’s say talkative.

Trusted Shitshow kicked off the proceedings, as early as 19:30. Also the Hafenklang now treats the elderly with due respect, so that the next work day starts with less of a hangover.

This is what they set out to deliver, unfortunately initially to a rather empty room.

    Shitshow – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024)

    And it started like this:

    I didn´t love to but i will
    I will make it!

    Bäng!

It did set the scene for another near perfect support slot delivery, full of energy, full of (self-proclaimed) kiss-ass powerpunk. And kick-ass powerpunk they delivered to perfection.

The only downside: The light was shite to the max and thus most of the visuals went drenched in a flood of red.

    Shitshow (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

If you have not scored their two singles, do it now.

But be aware, they try to scam you every once in a while: A mate went over and said “the two singles” and got two singles. After the show, on the final sundowner sip, he took stock of all records bought (which included just another Hard Skin record) and realized … two times same.

Luckily they got their merch still on the table and with a blushed smile it was corrected. Charming band, i’d love to see them grow much bigger.

Next the Avengers, who in their new incarnation since 2004 are by now also a 20 years going force. With them the room was much more crowded and sure their all-time hits from 1977 – 1979 still trigger plenty of sing-a-long.

    Avengers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

Delivery was a bit on-off, the sound varied between not so good and … bad. And the drummer – as on previous occasions – was hitting it too hard (and thus too loud). But the energy flow from the stage (and back) made up for it.

And in front of the stage it was a largely female (and happy) contingent, also that did add positively to the energy flow. For me this is most of the times that is a sign for a good show.

How did it sound? It sounded like this (and not exactly the type of more mellow delivery that should have been there for the song):

But however the sound is, the songs still touch (and btw the newer ones work too). And very frank, the songs from the Steve Jones produced White Noise EP are even today so relevant.

As the internet (damn internet, never forgets) has it:

The Avengers, featuring singer Penelope Houston, helped lay the groundwork for political punk while giving the nascent musical form one of its first dynamic frontwomen.

And thus American In Me, Uh-Oh!, Corpus Christi and Gold Digger (avoiding the innocently choosen original name White Nigger) are still the skeleton of todays Avengers set, also at the Hafenklang:

    Avengers – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024)

Touching set, not the best sound but still one of the most convincing packages from 1977 still around. And still taking the time to tour Europe, big thanks for that.

With that the room was fully energized and actually fully packed, 250 good people downstairs at the Hafenklang.

    How to top that?

Invite Hard Skin and let them have a go at the lot.

The last time that try ended in a real mess (thanks to the (in)capable hands of Riebe), this time it went dramatically different.

For a start Sean looked much more healthy and for a finish Exhibits A, B, C and D where absent from the show. So the only confrontation came from the stage and by Sean, trying to take the piss out of Bremen eer Hamburg.

What he did not account for was that from time to time he will be meeting someone with a witty mind – when he tried to place the old joke of “why do we think we are here” and finish it off with the scoreline of “because of the money” he was cut short by a tongue-in-check reply from the audience “because you want to get your teeth done“.

Thanks mate, that was masterclass challenge/response. Even on stage all three Hard Skins fell apart laughing.

And whilst be chatty they also managed to delivery stupid little sing-a-long gems like this one:

    Sing-a-long:

Sitting in the corner, cookin' up a ruse
Laughing with the Hard Skin, drinkin' lodsa booze
Along comes the old brill, stinking up the drum
Talking fuckin' bollocks, talking' out his bum

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce

Accusing us of this, accusing us of that
Fuckin' stupid bastard, pork scratchin' twat
You're down the road johnny, fuckin sort him out
If you need some muscle, give the boys a shout

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce

    Fuckin' sort it!
    Sort it!
    Fuckin' sort it!
You know you better sort it out!

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' FARCE!

    Shove it up your ass!
    Fuck off!

Whilst i was a bit skeptic with giving Hard Skin the headlining it simply turned out as the winning receipt. And to my surprise the packed house stayed for them, was glued to them and laughed with them.

On top of that the female contingent in front of the stage did grow and entered into serious dancing – influencing most of the room into getting going.

    Just purrrrfect!

    Hard Skin (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

It is quite stunning how much Hard Skin are still appreciated in Hamburg, obviously their humor works for the Hamburg lot. So big fanx to them and hopefully Riebe is able to persuade them back again once they have rested a wee bit (and again are out of money).

And if that was not enough, Hard Skin also had an additional surprise in the pocket (respective in the van). As you may know myself (and some of me mates) are always looking after buying vinyl at shows, for me it always comes from the fact that a band either surprised or convinced me live.

Upon chatting with one of me mates, who had his hands already full of two Shitshow singles and the Hard Skin Live At Dijon LP, Ben (Hard Skin guitarist) noted that he had his Solo Album with him and offered that with the words “and it is quite different“.

JT – The Hill To Die On (JT Classics CLASS016 2022)

My mate was interested and Ben disappeared (for some time). Coming back he held three records, that where immediately taken away from him (against hard european currency). He added the advise to listen to it with headphones on and closed eyes.

The internet (damn internet, never forgets) states with respect to the LP:

Hard Skin’s JT presents an album of alternative, accidental instrumentals that are not for the faint-hearted or hard of hearing.

Described as “delicate”, “thought-provoking” and “emotive”, this unexpected cluster of melodies offers an unwitting nod toward Eno and the like.

It’s easy to pander to the mob. JT has veered away, confirming this record as an irregular punk classic.

I gave it a spin a couple of days later and Ben was spot on: The songs are near perfect soundtrack parts and closing your eyes and firing off your brain cinema makes it click. Click big time actually. Well done for getting something that wide done, Ben!

If you dare, score the vinyl here from JT Classics (mind you, post-Brexit import cost).

Great evening, rounded off with a final Cuba-Libre.

Great bands, great companions up to and including Rudi K coming all the way from Munich. Gave me a cosy, warm and home feeling after doing my 60’s birthday alone, up and away with the love of me life.

And further to that, it was stunning to see that a show with diverse bands from three different corners could sell out a Monday evening and that a show with non-perfect lightning and non-perfect sound can put so much positive energy into the room.

I bet ya almost everybody left on a high.

    I did, happy me.

  • … selling out for a living!

… selling out for a living!

One of these nights. Fans watching sellouts. Boring`?

Far from, this evening was full of unexpected and somewhat expected surprises. A surprise indeed was that the show was moved downstairs into the larger room and that it ended up sold out. Somewhat a surprise, as The Meffs only had a not so full show on the MS Stubnitz last year to mark their ground in Hamburg.

A bigger surprise came for me mate Frosch and myself when the support to the support entered the stage and a very familiar face not seen for i guess 30odd years took residence behind the drums. Schnaps hail from the Harz mountain range and said drummer hails from the top of that mountain range. Welcome back to your home harbor, Christoph.

Schnaps have the same setup as The Meffs, just drums, guitar and singing, though the main singing is from the drummer. I guess i would drop them into the Deutsch-Punk cupboard, though they dub themselves as “SCHNAPS are a two-piece old-school HC-Punk band from Wernigerode, Germany.

    Schnaps (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 31.01.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

Even with all the joy to see an old fellow my ears and brain did signal “Deutsch Punk“. And that paired with a guitar that sounded – alone – way to thin. Go check them out for yerself, for me it did not really work out. With more volume, more umpf, more depth and force on the guitar it might sound better for my single minded mu-sick-al ears.

Next one of my local favorites, Shitshow yet again took the stage at the Hafenklang. And yet again they delivered a near perfect support slot in front of a packed Hafenklang. And yet again they proved worthy for the task.

    Shitshow (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 31.01.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

Around a rock solid blast of hardcore bangers well below the 02:00 (magic) mark they also have branched out into wider territory – a good balance that capitalizes on their abilities and allowing Julia to fill the front with her presence, her voice and her aggressiveness.

Here is Red Light from their 2023 EP:

And as with almost all their songs it has great lyrics too:

Lights off, flying through night life
Another night, red light, my eyes open wide
They stare at me, but they never see
The person behind - myself, me

Red light- another night to fight
Forces me on my knees - who is the person behind?
Eyes stare at me, but they never see
The person behind - myself, me

And you think of your dreams
Don’t put them off until tomorrow
    You regret!

I simply like them, they always are able to mark a near perfect, crisp, set. Go and score their hit singles!

The audience by now was well prepared for the headliner, who are to sail into a European run that will be a month long. And this is how The Meffs kicked off:

Unfortunately for Schnaps there was the immediate contrast: Drums, guitar and vocals but the guitar with so much more umpf and due to the fact that Lily takes the singing duties with so much more action on stage.

On top of that Lily comes with all the street smartness and banter that we like so much from those from the Island yonder (that choose to separate itself from us). And as their songs have meanings, have messages her lead ins always provide relevant context.

    The Meffs (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 31.01.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

From start to finish The Meffs simply owned the audience. Upfront the audience was more female than male (always a good sign) with loads of dancing. Within that, there was also a small justified pit violence, a good slap into the face of someone who sported an overly male dancing style with little to no attention to his companions.

Sure they played also what maybe can be dubbed their signature song, here is Broken Britain, Broken Brains:

I got to admit that i was a bit unsure if i would dig them fully, there was plenty of praise from the Blackpool Pilgrims and there was much acclaim in the Indie press (and already the term Indie pisses me off big time normally).

But what i got was a humble, friendly and approachable duo. With a real bonus: No fuzz and outspoken truthful – Lily invited the audience to the merch table after the show to buy stuff and have a chat “because that is what i do for a living“.

I wish them to be sellouts forever (and make a living from it)!

(The Meffs FB page. go and find me on the pic)

  • … a loud guitar and a perfect support: Civic & Shitshow!

… a loud guitar and a perfect support: Civic & Shitshow!

A shitload of folks was eager for this show, Civic to finally return to Hamburg (though they would have ample reasons to continue to bypass Hamburg). A couple of folks went abroad to see them, be it in Gronnigen or following them in the UK. It was to be an early show on a cold and miserable Sunday, i took more time than normally in me warm home prior to strolling down to the Hafenklang. Mainly as i had little interest in the support to be.

But i missed something, somehow Shitshow short notice landed the support slot and when i arrived at the half filled Hafenklang they just entered the stage … out of blue i was luckily spot on with the time.

Shitshow caught my attention with their first EP last year, as this sported a veritable hit:

Great snotty lyrics and a near perfect chorus, delivered with a straight punch into the groin…

There’s a smile on her face
    Her brother can´t recognize it

And the sun in this place
    He can’t see it
    He’s caught in a lie

    Time is money
    Money’s time
They believe, believe in this crime

    Baby, baby
    It’s stealing your time
    Pay attention, just be mine

    Ring, ring, ring
    Driving against trees

    Bling, bling, bling
What the hell is so funny bout gifs?

    And the weather doesn’t matter,
    Your best friend
    Is just a machine yeah!

As such i was positively surprised and i guess cautiously optimistic. And indeed they delivered a near perfect support stint on the big stage of the Hafenklang.

What did i get? Marta with her out-of-genre Bass, always smiling. Kirschan on Guitar, shredding ahead like no tomorrow. Julia, singing with the right balance between aggressiveness and the full vocal spectrum (howling low, yelling high – but always loud). And Vic on Drums, one of the most forceful drummers in Hamburg i guess.

    Shitshow (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 26.11.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023

And all their songs are crisp, fast forward and with umpf. Plenty of umpf actually. Here is “CopPorn” from their new EP, out just now.

A perfect sum of their abilities and these do include that – even when crisp – the songs have structure, build up and repeats. Go listen to the recorded version, go!

And this one has even has more weird lyrics, down to almost being a poem:

I take a knife, you bring a gun
I’ll kill them all, I do it all for good
    Don´t need no make-up
    Can do without
    I am your nightmare
    I´m coming from behind
    Cause you

You took my life and I’ll leave it all behind
    I´d rather be afraid
    I´ll leave it all behind
    I didn´t love to
    I will make it!

You shot the sheriff, I took his gun
We do it all for good
And I´ve seen freedom for all mankind
Can see it with my eyes

I was convinced within a few songs and somehow was angry to myself that i did not try to make an earlier effort to see them (but rather got them now as a by-product). The audience was also happy, plenty of applause and smiles around me.

    Shitshow (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 26.11.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023

My wild guess is that they played all they had but as said, that constituted a near perfect set with almost perfect sound. Look out for them, it is worth it.

    Shitshow – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 26.11.2023 (c) gehkacken.de)

The only complaint i heard was a faint one, a mate took a small offense in the – as he phased it – metal like frontwomanship of Julia. I guess it was his envy towards her headbanginghairthrowing, something his rather bald (and hatted) head won’t allow.

I ignored the complaint, as i was long set to buy their new EP (as they convinced me live).

Next Civic, after a short changeover on stage. They took the stage completely unpretentious and set the lot the following goals:

    Civic – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 26.11.2023 (c) gehkacken.de)

That was a lot and within the first block it already gave us their new single Hourglass. Me mate Frosch, a Civic devotee, took a recording:

It nicely sums up the set in totality: Somewhere between what a Music Paper summed up as “an unholy Lo-Fi-Mashup out of Garage Rock, Punk and 1990s Noise-Rock” and simply noise. Loud noise. And, standing on the left of the stage in front of Lewis, a fucking loud guitar i’d say. Overly loud.

Yannick, who drums for The Haermorrhoids and does sound at the Komet, complained already after the first song to Lewis that his guitar was too fucking loud. Jim took a slight offense in that complaint and asked the audience if there where more opinions for them on stage.

    There where none.

    Civic (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 26.11.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023

For the complaint itself it was justified, the last time a guitar bulldozed the rest of the mu-sick-al delivery that much was when Dave Chandler took his amp to 12. And that felt physically equally painful. But putting aside the level of amplification it was just master class manipulation of the guitar, the pedal board with effects and specifically the wahwah pedal by Lewis.

    Horrific loud guitar soundscapes anyone?

Resting on the rock solid backbone of Eli on Drums and Roland on Bass his guitar is the main sound element, specifically live. Frontline delivery by Jim adds the right level of kick, punch and aggression, so that the full mix is almost an art out of noise.

    Civic (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 26.11.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023

To me Civic are one of the few bands where my normal mantra “see live and only when convinced live buy a record” most likely would not work out for me, as this live delivery 1:1 to record would not suit my listening experience at home or on the move.

But luckily their recorded output is a wee bit more behaved, a wee bit better produced and the recording allows Lewis to record multiple guitar overdubs to make the songs … more polished? More well behaved?

I’d say … more perfect. Like my lovelist sing-a-long (that got slaughtered live too):

But hey, that is the joy of live mu-sick. Though i would have loved a wee bit more craftsmanship on the sound. But maybe my position in front of the stage, surrounded by mates (some with odd footie choices, give and take), was just the wrong one.

Another mate who stood back and near the mixing desk reported a good sound. Maybe the 100something folks in winter attire in front of him worked as a perfect sound barrier …

And how did Frosch like it? Very much … here is his account:

I definitely have to agree with Dirk as regards to Civic’s live performance compared to their recorded output. They surely kick ass on stage, and when I did recommend the band to friends and they did like what they heard, I was always in danger of getting told off, because playing live Civic always deliver a far more heavy, dirty, psyched out fuzz sound.

“Fuzz is a special type of distortion where harmonic overtones dominate the overall sound” the internet says, and maybe I’m completely wrong, being purely a fan not playing the instrument myself, but that might describe it very well.

Yeah, it’s a type of distortion but not for the sake of it or noise, but rather carrying the songs, giving them that special extra, like all the predecessors playing Australian Punk such as Celibate Rifles, Radio Birdman, Cosmic Psychos, just to name a few, did.

And even if Yannick would have tuned Lewis guitar down a little he was still well impressed by Civic’s professional performance just as most of our friends attending the gig.

Plus Civic did start their set with “Selling. Sucking. Blackmail. Bribes”, their most fuzzed out, in your face, almost hardcore punk song, the brutal sounding “7” released by Total Punk in the US.

Just confirms what Wikipedia states: The band's concept was to "do good rock and roll and not to stuff about with it".

Their set at Hafenklang was even a little shorter than usual, but we did get an encore, unfortunately not the possibly too obvious, but nevertheless fantastic “Hollywood Nights In Hamburg” from their Future Forecast album.

As Civic are working on their new album, and their latest song “Hourglass” promises a lot, I hope we’re in for another Civic tour and Hamburg visit in 2024!

Or, simple, it was a great show on a dark Sunday as both bands kicked ass. And as such i had to take vinly home, both in #recordcollectorsarepretentiousareseholes #coloredvinyl (and both #limitededition).

That is Shitshow’s 2023 EP, klick and order it!

    Shitshow – -+#?!$ EP (Eierloch Rec, 2023)

And this is the latest from Civic, a collection of their EPs and other old stuff. And as i never bothered to run after their EP’s a nice completion for me. Go and order (by klicking it).

Civic – New Vietnam And Singles (ATO Records, 2023)

And whilst it was an all around nice one, there was something missing. Me mate Frosch (a Civic devotee, did i mention it?) went all the way to try to persuade an Australian with an interest in mu-sick to come down and see fellow Australians (and handing him a CD that Civic gave to him in the UK, to add to that persuasion).

Bonus: Me Mate Frosch did try to persuade Socceroo Captian Jackson Irvine with a Civic CD …

Unfortunately Jackson did not make it (or maybe in disguise, no clue) but plenty of me mates made it (sans those down with Covid (get better mate!) or in NL (enjoying a short break after attending Revolution Calling)) and thus i felt simply home at the Hafenklang.

And Jackson? He will have all forgiveness of the world on Friday, right after the final whistle.

Top of the League, as much as both bands.
