… Avengers, paired again with a surprise!

Last years April visit by the Avengers was augmented by not so great lights and sound but provided a packed Hafenklang with loads of positive energy from a diverse rooster.

This year had Penelope and the band returning back to the post-Rebellion pattern in August and a surprise package with Garotos Podres from sunny Brazil.

And the lads from Brazil initially surprised me not only with a setlist but with some help on the words (at least that is what i think i did look at)…

Garotos Podres – Setlist etc (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 18.08.2025)

And this is how they kicked off:

Wow, that was not too bad. And plenty of chorus and sing-a-long compatibility (also thanks to the Porutguese language). Garotos Podres (translates to Rotten Boys) are around since 1982 and, according to their vocalist, had the privilege to be the last band that had a song censored (under the Military Dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985).

They speak just a little bit of English thus not too much interaction with the audience, though a handful of native Brazilians seemed to be front row and singing every single song with them.

    Garotos Pedros (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 18.08.2025)

The first part of the set i found actually enjoyable, in the middle they did throw in some covers (an outsch cover of Los Fastidos, a classic cover of Symarip) and from there it went somewhat south for my ears. Less sing-a-long Punk Rock.

Or old & much more simple songs like Santa Claus Is A Bitch (one of the censored ones back then):

By then i had the the singer almost down as simple old grunt but boy would i have been wrong:

In addition to his musical career, José Rodrigues Mao Júnior is also a university professor, master and doctor in Economic History. And a staunch supporter of Cuba. And the Revolution.

    Garotos Pedros (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 18.08.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

Within the band he is not the only one with a hidden surprise:

… when the Bass player is proud of his profession (c) gehkacken.de 2025

The Bass sported the best ever knuckle tattoo i have seen (no stupid HATE/LOVE or PUNK/ROCK) ever on stage. Just puuuurrrfect!

I got to admit that somewhat their set to me was half good, half not so good. For my fellow connoisseurs it was more the latter. But the audience, specifically the South Americans in the front, it looked like they had seen one of their heroes from the past.

To that extend it wasn’t that bad but just … different. And i guess they were touring anyway on a shoestring so thanks for gracing Hamburgo.

Different it was with the Avengers too, immediately i noted wow, a new face on bass and after some thinking i got the connect: That’s Hector Penalosa of The Zeros fame aka the Mexican Ramones aka one of the best Bomp! singles ever aka Don’t push me around.

    Wow, stunned.

And with him Teenage Rebell sounded like this:

Tight, hard and fast and on top Penelope with her strong voice. And bringing home some really old songs that actually almost all stood the test of time.

Youth anthems. Desperate calls for change.

    Avengers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 18.08.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

And within that context a song like Second To None is getting the message across still today:

I want to be different and you are not telling me what to do! Sing-a-long to the chorus:

Mom says I gotta dirty face
Dad says I’m looking out of place
Dog says I got shit on my shoes
What am I supposed to do?

Well, that’s one. I’m second to none
And that’s two. I don’t know what to do
And that’s three. You’re tellin me
    I’m still a baby

Where Garotos Pedros had their own little home contingent up front the Avengers where facing more an old male audience, though a few “younger” (everything below 50 most likely was young) folks attended too. It was not sold out but for a Monday it felt well filled.

Although the setlist for the last couple of years remains almost the same there was never bore. Penelope, Greg, Luis and Hector are versed musicians hitting the right tone, the right speed and being well together – and the rest is the class of the songs and Penelopes voice.

    Avengers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 18.08.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

On top the sound and lights where so much better than last time, making it just a perfect tight set. In between Penelope was almost in chatty mood, praising the Hafenklang (first ever show for her in Hamburg in the 90s with her solo venture), Hamburg and the audience.

The set finished with a small encore and sure with Penelopes mantra I Believe In Me:

… as in I Make My Dreams Real. My take – the Avengers in the current form are simply too good and still too relevant to be missed. Sure thing it is partly nostalgia. But much more i go out and see them because they have been consistent all along on the message and i’d like to support that, period.

Perfect Monday entertainment and companionship, getting to know something new (i have zero expertise on Brazilian Punk, other than some of me mates) and enjoying continued love for a treasured old love.

I do not need more in the context of #thereaintnuthinbetterthanlivemusic, honestly.

  • … 3 corners, 1 full room: Diversity wins!

… 3 corners, 1 full room: Diversity wins!

From the outset this was a wee bit a strange mixture: Local support, best in class. Often outshining the main act. American all-time favorites and heroes, but being confined to smaller and smaller venues. And then English loudmouth lads, offensive and … let’s say talkative.

Trusted Shitshow kicked off the proceedings, as early as 19:30. Also the Hafenklang now treats the elderly with due respect, so that the next work day starts with less of a hangover.

This is what they set out to deliver, unfortunately initially to a rather empty room.

    Shitshow – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024)

    And it started like this:

    I didn´t love to but i will
    I will make it!

    Bäng!

It did set the scene for another near perfect support slot delivery, full of energy, full of (self-proclaimed) kiss-ass powerpunk. And kick-ass powerpunk they delivered to perfection.

The only downside: The light was shite to the max and thus most of the visuals went drenched in a flood of red.

    Shitshow (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

If you have not scored their two singles, do it now.

But be aware, they try to scam you every once in a while: A mate went over and said “the two singles” and got two singles. After the show, on the final sundowner sip, he took stock of all records bought (which included just another Hard Skin record) and realized … two times same.

Luckily they got their merch still on the table and with a blushed smile it was corrected. Charming band, i’d love to see them grow much bigger.

Next the Avengers, who in their new incarnation since 2004 are by now also a 20 years going force. With them the room was much more crowded and sure their all-time hits from 1977 – 1979 still trigger plenty of sing-a-long.

    Avengers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

Delivery was a bit on-off, the sound varied between not so good and … bad. And the drummer – as on previous occasions – was hitting it too hard (and thus too loud). But the energy flow from the stage (and back) made up for it.

And in front of the stage it was a largely female (and happy) contingent, also that did add positively to the energy flow. For me this is most of the times that is a sign for a good show.

How did it sound? It sounded like this (and not exactly the type of more mellow delivery that should have been there for the song):

But however the sound is, the songs still touch (and btw the newer ones work too). And very frank, the songs from the Steve Jones produced White Noise EP are even today so relevant.

As the internet (damn internet, never forgets) has it:

The Avengers, featuring singer Penelope Houston, helped lay the groundwork for political punk while giving the nascent musical form one of its first dynamic frontwomen.

And thus American In Me, Uh-Oh!, Corpus Christi and Gold Digger (avoiding the innocently choosen original name White Nigger) are still the skeleton of todays Avengers set, also at the Hafenklang:

    Avengers – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024)

Touching set, not the best sound but still one of the most convincing packages from 1977 still around. And still taking the time to tour Europe, big thanks for that.

With that the room was fully energized and actually fully packed, 250 good people downstairs at the Hafenklang.

    How to top that?

Invite Hard Skin and let them have a go at the lot.

The last time that try ended in a real mess (thanks to the (in)capable hands of Riebe), this time it went dramatically different.

For a start Sean looked much more healthy and for a finish Exhibits A, B, C and D where absent from the show. So the only confrontation came from the stage and by Sean, trying to take the piss out of Bremen eer Hamburg.

What he did not account for was that from time to time he will be meeting someone with a witty mind – when he tried to place the old joke of “why do we think we are here” and finish it off with the scoreline of “because of the money” he was cut short by a tongue-in-check reply from the audience “because you want to get your teeth done“.

Thanks mate, that was masterclass challenge/response. Even on stage all three Hard Skins fell apart laughing.

And whilst be chatty they also managed to delivery stupid little sing-a-long gems like this one:

    Sing-a-long:

Sitting in the corner, cookin' up a ruse
Laughing with the Hard Skin, drinkin' lodsa booze
Along comes the old brill, stinking up the drum
Talking fuckin' bollocks, talking' out his bum

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce

Accusing us of this, accusing us of that
Fuckin' stupid bastard, pork scratchin' twat
You're down the road johnny, fuckin sort him out
If you need some muscle, give the boys a shout

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce

    Fuckin' sort it!
    Sort it!
    Fuckin' sort it!
You know you better sort it out!

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce

Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' farce
Law and Order - up your arse
You make me laugh - you're a fuckin' FARCE!

    Shove it up your ass!
    Fuck off!

Whilst i was a bit skeptic with giving Hard Skin the headlining it simply turned out as the winning receipt. And to my surprise the packed house stayed for them, was glued to them and laughed with them.

On top of that the female contingent in front of the stage did grow and entered into serious dancing – influencing most of the room into getting going.

    Just purrrrfect!

    Hard Skin (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 29.04.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

It is quite stunning how much Hard Skin are still appreciated in Hamburg, obviously their humor works for the Hamburg lot. So big fanx to them and hopefully Riebe is able to persuade them back again once they have rested a wee bit (and again are out of money).

And if that was not enough, Hard Skin also had an additional surprise in the pocket (respective in the van). As you may know myself (and some of me mates) are always looking after buying vinyl at shows, for me it always comes from the fact that a band either surprised or convinced me live.

Upon chatting with one of me mates, who had his hands already full of two Shitshow singles and the Hard Skin Live At Dijon LP, Ben (Hard Skin guitarist) noted that he had his Solo Album with him and offered that with the words “and it is quite different“.

JT – The Hill To Die On (JT Classics CLASS016 2022)

My mate was interested and Ben disappeared (for some time). Coming back he held three records, that where immediately taken away from him (against hard european currency). He added the advise to listen to it with headphones on and closed eyes.

The internet (damn internet, never forgets) states with respect to the LP:

Hard Skin’s JT presents an album of alternative, accidental instrumentals that are not for the faint-hearted or hard of hearing.

Described as “delicate”, “thought-provoking” and “emotive”, this unexpected cluster of melodies offers an unwitting nod toward Eno and the like.

It’s easy to pander to the mob. JT has veered away, confirming this record as an irregular punk classic.

I gave it a spin a couple of days later and Ben was spot on: The songs are near perfect soundtrack parts and closing your eyes and firing off your brain cinema makes it click. Click big time actually. Well done for getting something that wide done, Ben!

If you dare, score the vinyl here from JT Classics (mind you, post-Brexit import cost).

Great evening, rounded off with a final Cuba-Libre.

Great bands, great companions up to and including Rudi K coming all the way from Munich. Gave me a cosy, warm and home feeling after doing my 60’s birthday alone, up and away with the love of me life.

And further to that, it was stunning to see that a show with diverse bands from three different corners could sell out a Monday evening and that a show with non-perfect lightning and non-perfect sound can put so much positive energy into the room.

I bet ya almost everybody left on a high.

    I did, happy me.

  • … when the support also surprises the main act then it must have been a great show!

… when the support also surprises the main act then it must have been a great show!

As i share my views on shows i attended i never shy away from pointing out items i liked and items i did not like. And there is no preference nor bitterness. What i do like is to get surprises, share surprises and praise surprises.

And this hot Tuesday was to be a show of surprises. The least surprise was that the Avengers used the Blackpool weekend as a lift off for a round of shows in Germany, it was actually expected and much welcome. Also a lesser surprise was to meet Biber, former Knallschoten Bass Player, as he usually attends Avengers shows at the Hafenklang.

A slightly bigger surprise was to meet an old school fellow long out of country, who actually was Punk #4 at my school in early 1979 when i was just about to venture into that mu-sick-al direction. I think he is to blame for my love for Sham 69!

The biggest surprise though was the support act. I never took note of them prior and only got word from friends after the show that they had seen an incarnation earlier (and had been equally surprised back then).

And what did surprise me? It was Reverend Beat-Man & The Underground from sunny Switzerland.

    Reverend Beat-Man & The Underground (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 09.08.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

It has been quite some time that i saw such an enigmatic front man who is able to not only command his troops but also literally confronting the audience in a way that glues eyes towards him. He is quite unique and acts like a real actor in the best positive sense of the word.

And how does their self proclaimed Doom Blues Nasty No-Future-Wave Synth Folk Trash sound? The Doom Blues element of it sounded like this:

Every song sounded different and on every song the Reverend assumed a different persona. I guess his fellow musicians (i understand stolen from other bands. eg. Milan Slick from the Synth-Punk-Duo Entartete Musik on Keyboards, Beatrice Graf from Ester Poly on Drums and Benjamin Glaus from Skinny Jim Tennessee on Guitar) and their respective abilities and background make that possible.

    Reverend Beat-Man & The Underground (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 09.08.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

They not only got plenty of applause from the audience ( i guess almost 200) but also had Penelope Houston glued to the side of the stage and taking videos. I guess they surprised her as much as they surprised me.

The are unique, driven by a singular cause (and personality, i take) and they bring back a variation that frankly i sometimes lack on eg. H/C shows. Somehow it felt like being back at the very early 80s when Punk branched out way beyond the original rock rooted Punk Rock.

If you dare, try them out. I won’t dare to buy a record (as i am unsure if the music works for me at home or on the move) but if you dare on that front too than please rely on Sounds Of Subterrania to get their stuff. The owner loves them.

The Reverend and his disciples already made the evening a good one, as such i was in no eagerness for the Avengers actually. A rare feel in the context of support and headliner but to a certain extend if was here exactly for them in the first place.

    The Avengers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 09.08.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

It feels really good to see Penelope and Greg still at it, supported by young guns on Bass and Drums. At the start the drums felt a wee bit loud, as the drummer had a high intensity, and Gregs guitar was way to low on volume. Down the road that got better and we got to enjoy not a 1:1 copy of the 1978 Avengers but got their classic hits (and they only ever produced hits) in a real 20th century fashion.

Here is Corpus Christi and a song that is covered in 2020 by a rock star is testament to that simple fact: Only ever hits!

And yes, Penelope is still a great voice and has aged well. Would she know that some of her 1978 pictures made an everlasting impression on me? I bet she does, as she has been a hell of a good looking punkette back then. And she does well in keeping the Avengers alive and kicking.

    The Avengers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 09.08.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

They played for about an hour i guess but game back for some extras, including the all time sing-a-long and mantra: I Believe In Me!

    I believe in me
    I make my dreams real
    I believe in me
I said I believe in me

If there is one 7″ you should get from 1977 US of A then it is the Avengers debut one on Dangerhouse.

    To quote an infamous person:

These three songs are the Avengers recording debut. My all time favorite female punk singer, Penelope Houston, fronts the band and is just too great. What a voice filled with feeling she has! You just automatically believe everything she says.

True, so true. The Avengers left behind many happy people, the Reverend left behind many happy people – i can tell you i left happy too. I got what i love most: Live musik i can sing to and live music that surprises me. Paired with meeting people that share an equal vision. Just puuuurfect!

PS: The story of The Avengers is not without tears and one of the sadder element is the story of the original bass player James Clavin Wilsey, who went to fame and from there down to drugs, homelessness and … death. There is a book on this story but to get my hand on it i would have to spend 25$ on postage. Too expensive. Anyone with an idea to get it in Europe cheaper?
