Bücher, schnell gelesen: Teil 1.431

Gelesen: 01. – 08.01.2020, netto 405 Seiten.

Das ist das 15te Buch aus einer in Norwegen ziemlich berühmten Reihe um den Privatdetektiv Varg Veum. Gibt es auch als Serie für den geneigten Binge-Watcher.

Das ganze ist sehr nordisch (langsam, behäbig, viel Landschaft, viele kleine Zirkel von Menschen) und ein so gar nicht typischer norwegischer Krimi.

Es ist sowohl eine Rückblende auf das Leben von Varg vor seiner Zeit als Privatdetektiv als auch eine Verzahnung mit heute. Vorher war er Sozialarbeiter und hatte mehr als einmal mit Jon Egil zu tun. Immer gab es dabei Tote. Jetzt ist Jon Egil aus dem Knast entlassen und sinnt angeblich auf Rache, u.a. auch an Varg.

Viele Rückblenden, ganz viel Norwegen in den 70ern und 80ern und ganz viel Norwegen hinten am Arsch der Welt, ganz am Ende des Fjordes. Wo die Uhren definitiv anders gehen als in der großen Stadt.

Kein klassisches “Finde den Mörder” Spiel sondern ehr eine ziemlich breit angelegte Sozialstudie. Drogen, Alkohol, Kindesmißbrauch und noch mehr in einer eigentlich als Wohlstandsgesellschaft angelegten Umgebung.

Der Flow ist entsprechend langsam, tief und verliebt in Details. Und das passt perfekt. Als allein stehendes Buch mit einem für mich perfektem Ende (das hier aber garantiert ein Cliffhänger ist).

… 2019 in numbers

As i am not yet back at the treadmill it’s time to take a toll on 2019. As ever i kept track of what i read and what i listen too (via this blog and via the playlists published here).

On the show side 2019 was great, up to and including a single away trip to savior and pay homage to the Descendents in Hannover with some of me close mates. Biggest miss was not taking the trip to Punk Rock Raduno #4 in sunny Bergamo – i have been reminded more than once by the Hamburg lot attending it.

Best show? I think that goes to D.I. at the Hafenklang, closely followed by Descendents in Hannover, Hag and Axe Rash at the Hafenklang and mOi!n it’s Hamburg #4 at the Monkeys.

And at that show also the biggest single surprise did play: Kalenko Urdangak from the sunny Basque country single handedly did not only blew the roof off but stunned 200 odd people versed in the genre.

Runners up where Nasser Hund with their record release party at the Hafenklang, Yard Bomb with their D.I. support and Loose Nukes during the K-Town Warm-up. And just slightly off the standard pattern Hola Ghost with their stunning Scandinavian B-Movie Mariachi Rock, Gringo style (at the Monkeys).

Biggest miss for me? Sharp/Shock at the Monkeys. Damn. Killer band.

Honorable mentions need to go the Mighty Mighty BossTones for coming back to Hamburg after 21 long years, Clowns for repeating last years blow-out of the Hafenklang and to the Bar Stool Preachers for matching the Adolescents in speed during their surprise show at the Hafenklang.

Most heart warming moment of the year was Old Erwin’s farewell at the Knust, there are no words that can spell out the loss for our little circuit.

So a big thanks to the venues, the bands and all those in attendance with me. I love you. Biggest surprise on that front was that the Hafenklang finally took up my suggestion to sell a season ticket. I am now proud holder of a 2020 All Shows tickets for the Hafenklang and i am even more spoiled by the fact that this is season ticket #1.

May i suggest that Sam and Ralf of the Monkeys give it a thought too? I would be tempted.

Now that is significantly less than 2018, namely due to the fact that we moved house and that requires you to pack / unpack your 1000’s of books and records rather than reading them or listening to them.

Pity that i did not get to read more music books, i think i will need to redouble the effort on that side of things.

Best read 2019 was Ivy Pochodas “Wonder Valley” followed by anything from Garry Disher. And if you trust people – i trust those who run the Polar Verlag and Pulp Master. I buy their stuff without any pre-checks or hesitation.

And i can also safely recommend anything that has been going through the hands of either Thomas Wörtche or through a translation by the wonderful Conny Lösch. Honestly. Trust. Me.

And on the record front? Discogs count moved from 4.732 to 4.783 (this is due to my self imposed rule to only buy records from bands that i have seen live and preferably at the show itself – and yes, i do break that rule for the occasion).

Alan Parks – Tod im Februar (Heyne Hardcore, 2019)

Gelesen: 21. – 31.12.2019, netto 419 Seiten.

Mehr Seiten und mehr Härte: Die Fortsetzung von Blutiger Januar ist dabei aber alles andere als weniger blutig.

Im Gegenteil! Was mit einem auf bestialische Weise ermordetem Celtic Spieler am 10. Februar 1973 beginnt endet am 19. Februar 1973 mit so einigen Überraschungen.

Wieder ist Detective Harry McCoy ein einsamer Cop in einer dreckigen, kalten und dunklen Stadt. Weder seine eigenen Teufel kann er im Zaum halten (und wenn, dann nur mit Alkohol, Cannabis und Speed) noch kann und will er die Teufel in der Stadt im Zaum halten. Im Glasgow der 70er setzt die Polizei auf die gute alte “wir kennen unsere Gangster und die sorgen für Ruhe” Methode.

Der Mord jedoch bringt indirekt dieses Gleichgewicht durcheinander und McCoy muss sich vor allem seinen Teufeln stellen: Den größten bringt er dabei um die Ecke (und kommt damit mit einem Polizisten Mord durch). Diese moralische Richtschnur gibt den Takt vor und als dann noch der King der Northside ums Leben kommt geht es im nassen und kaltem Glasgow um die Krone…

… und ganz nebenbei schafft es Alan Parks in diesem Buch eine leidenschaftliche Anklage zu zwei historisch heiklen Themen im United Kingdom anzubringen: Der Missbrauch von Jungs in Erziehungsheimen und die bestialischen psychiatrischen (Folter-) Methoden die an ihren Müttern durchgeführt wurden: Hier erlebt die Lobotomie (die in Dänemark (sic!) noch bis in die 80er anerkannt war) eine grauenvolle Rückkehr.

Und aus der downward spiral gibt es für McCoy offensichtlich keine entkommen. Kurz bevor er von Speed auf H upgraded bekommt er jedoch die Kurve, allerdings ist die Welt nüchtern für ihn zu hart: Ein Mörder löst bei ihm alle Blockaden…
