… early Easter, early start: Showboating with loads of fun!

It is not only me, also plenty of me mates share the desire to see The Haermorrhoids making it big. For a start (though a wee bit of a tiny start) they have setup a short tour through Germany, Dutchistan, Belgium and back to Germany: 10 shows in 10 days.

Kick off was sure on home turf, this time round on the MS Hedi supporting Autogramm from yonder side of the Atlantic.

Technically speaking it turned into a tour on the MS Claudia, as the MS Hedi was not available. The good thing with that was that slightly more people could be taken on board, so the packed tour turned into an even more packed tour.

The Haermorrhoids kicked off and from the start proved that they set sail for the tour as a well rehearsed outfit. Banger after banger, little chit-chat between the songs. Also no hick-ups.

    The Haermorrhoids (MS Hedi, Hamburg, 28.03.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

Playing on a boat to an extend is also falling victim to the weather, luckily the mighty river Elbe was calm and thus the audience (standing 5 cm away from the musicians) was not falling into them (and vice-versa).

They even attempted (and mastered) a new song never before played live, much to the joy of the audience. And as much as the outside was gray and rainy, the inside of the MS Claudia heated up nicely – fueled by The Haermorrhoids and their crisp Ramonescore.

    The Haermorrhoids (MS Hedi, Hamburg, 28.03.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

If anything, then this show yet again has proven that they keep it too small, to low profile. I do hope they lick blood on this short run and i also do hope for them that they say “Yes – go!” if even a glimpse of hitting it bigger – much bigger actually – comes around.

Make sure you check them out – start with their 2nd and latest LP:

Remember, they are the best band in the world (according to Luke).

    ( (c) gehkacken.de 2024)

And Luke, as you can see, is able to drink the Jever double handed. As such he is an authority you must trust, period!

The Haermorrhoids finished their hour just about when the MS Claudia was pulling dockside to replanish drinks and unload not needed gear. That gave way for the 2nd one hour sail through the harbor, mu-sick-al joy to be provided by Autogramm (technically from Vancouver, CA but with members from Vancouver, Seattle and Chicago).

It was their 2nd show ever in Hamburg and their first on a tiny cruise vessel through a large harbor, with a large city (the most beautiful city in the world, actually) as the backdrop.

Where The Haermorrhoids where Ramonescore (and thus very 70s), Autogramm are surprisingly 80s (and that in a very clever way). The Internet (damn Internet, never forgets) puts that in a few choice words (and references):

If you've been hankering after some old school Tubeway army style alt-punk, then get an ear full of this: it’s the Cars driving Numan around listening to some real ‘80s radio before checking out Duncan Reid, it's that catchy.

(Dom Daley in Uber Rock Magazine)

From the start Autogramm lived up to that promise. Pure Pop in power mode, melodies and umpf plus a fitting synthie (and sometimes … less so fitting). On top soft vocals, catchy refrains and multi-vocal choruses. And a stunning visual opposite to that mu-sick-al cupboard.

    Autogramm (MS Hedi, Hamburg, 28.03.2024 (c) gehkacken.de 2024

They played their normal set i guess and also spend some time to enjoy both setup on the MS Claudia and the surrounding in the harbor up to and including the views on a harbor at work. And because they played their normal set they where done well before the MS Claudia was back at the Landungsbrücken.

Whilst they started to pack up the audience insisted that they would only be done if the vessle is back at the mooring, so they unpacked and hit the lot with a real cool extra (that even has a video and a story):

(Note: Live it had more power and was a great sing-a-long)

    And the story?

It’s kind of tongue in cheek, being well aware that we are neither kids nor cool. We took the song and changed it to sound more 80’s and part of the Autogramm sound, adding keys and harmonies. The video is about a secret murderer loose in the forest around a camp site. It’s supposed to be a throwback to those cheesy 80’s campsite horror movies.

The video is based on a story/concept, ‘Unknown Caller’, by Jeffry Lee loosely and was inspired by 1974 Canadian psychological slasher film ‘Black Christmas’. It was shot on location at Lakeside Motel and Campground on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

Vocalist/guitarist Jiffy Marx says of the video:”I’ve always wanted to shoot a movie at Lakeside. It’s rustic simplicity seems frozen in time making it the perfect setting for a classic summer camp goofball comedy meets cabin in the woods slasher flick.”

A perfect ending for a cool set, they even had the female contingent upfront dancing (whilst the males nodded away sipping on the beer). If only this would have been on a lush summer evening and without the need to leave work early (check in at 1700 on a workday is … for many a challenge).

Don’t forget to check out their mu-sick, start with their recent LP:

If you want to score the vinyl that is easy, just hop over to Sounds Of Subterrania (our trusted local dealer).

Thanks to Wild Wax Shows for pulling this together and sending both bands on tour.

I was enjoying it so much that i took the offer for a lift to the Haermorrhoids show on Friday in Schneverdingen (roughly an hour south of Hamburg), as this band should play sold out shows only. Period.

… showboating with Bad Job Boys and plenty of guests!

Sometimes it helps to wind back the clock. If you have your DeLorean at hand then set the dial to 28.11.1978 and location to the Bezirkskrankenhaus Suhl in what was back then East Germany tucked away behind the iron curtain (and Suhl specifically tucked away in a distant & empty corner of that country).

You’d be a lonely new born boy, locked in during a catastrophic winter, including power cuts.

If the DeLorean still works reset it to 11.12.1978 and set the location to the Airport Club in Hamburg (in what was back then West Germany).

You’d be a happy as a fuck youngster, as you would see the first show of The Buttocks, most likely the first German hardcore band ever (at least according to experts that like to stick labels on items).

DeLoreans are no longer available, so the Bad Job Boys took 2nd best – the M/S Hedi aka Frau Hedis Tanzkaffee. It holds more passengers than a DeLorean and it allows for a gentle (and sometimes not so gentle) ride on the mighty river Elbe. And you can play music on it. You can load your friends in, in numbers.

And that is what Bodo, Frank, Piotr and Stéphane did.

    Bad Job Boys (M/S Hedi, Hamburg, 04.10.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

But having the M/S Hedi all for themselves was not their thing so they invited some special guests along. And all of these special guests would get special tasks within the 2nd set of the jolly.

Bad Job Boys with their specials guests (M/S Hedi, Hamburg, 04.10.2023 (c) Bad Job Boys 2023)
From right to left: Luke (Spitfire Stevens), Sabine (Bullshit Boy), Barbro (Demolition Girls), Arne (C³I, Nasser Hund and many more), Bodo (BJB), Frank (BJB), Mike (ex-Buttocks), His Holiness Monseigneur Larsson (BJB), Piotr (BJB), Dennis (Nix Da)

Round One was to be more or less their standard set, delivered to what should have been a packed showboat (as only 5 tickets where left). In reality it was much more spacious, by the looks a couple of folks dropped out in fear of weather (a wee bit colder and in the morning strong winds).

    Bad Job Boys - Setlists (M/S Hedi, Hamburg, 04.10.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Round Two was to be the fun part, nicely hidden from the view of the fans. Only rumors of surprises came via whispers (and bread crumbs spread within the press).

The first part went almost too fast, besides the anyway to-be accepted fact of the impossibility to get a perfect sound on that tiny dinghy they came across fully rehearsed, in sync and with steady feat (though both Bodo and Piotr did not move around a lot in fear of surprise waves).

    Bad Job Boys (M/S Hedi, Hamburg, 04.10.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

And then the fun part descended upon the lot: First Luke provided guest vocals for his very own praise “Luke Kocht” (Frank did write this song as a praise for the vegan cuisine cooked and served by Christiane &Luke), then Dennis joined in for two songs.

    Bad Job Boys - Guests (M/S Hedi, Hamburg, 04.10.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Next was for Barbro to lend her great voice to “Delfine” and giving it indeed some extra umpf (though the vocals where almost non-audible).

From there the baton was passed by Stéphane like this:

… and it left the lot stunned. The Bad Job Boys normally do not cover songs but technically speaking these where not covers, this was the maximum you would ever get that would smell like a Buttocks re-union (that anyway never ever will happen).

And within that the proof that Mike still has it and that songs like “You” and “Law and Order” are able to stand the test of time. The amount of joy this provided to most of the lot was unfathomable and there where silent smiles all around.

But the Bad Job Boys did not leave it there, for the next song Arne joined in, leading into a grand finale with “Jet Boy Jet Girl” being sung in 3 languages: First verse in French by Stéphane, 2nd verse in English by Sabine and the 3rd verse by Arne in German.

And the lot: Sang the chorus, as loud as possible.

And whilst the M/S Hedi was almost back moored they played a final song, i think it was “No Winners” yet again. Great show, great idea to have friends sing-a-long and a moment to forever remember with Mike singing the old Buttocks burners. It did not even feature in my bucket list, i guess i need to rewrite that one now!

One of the most enjoyable trips i ever made on the M/S Hedi and almost coming left field.

Thanks indeed Bad Job Boys for that showboat trip, well done!

And that little lonely boy from eastern Germany? He survived the winter, he survived growing up as young punk in a toxic environment and he battled through hospital this year … with the Buttocks being his biggest love in Punk from Germany next to Schleimkeim.

And on this early autumn evening he joined the sail for the 2nd round, sat on the bench of the M/S Hedi holding his crutches and was made a very very happy bunny thanks to Stéphane, Mike & the rest of the Bad Job Boys.

This was his view on “You”:

followed suit by “Law and Order”:

I thoroughly believe that these goodies will help him to recover even faster as good music simply heals, the energy of good music simply is flooding your blood with euphoria and the broad smile it creates makes you happy.

    #thereaintnuthinbetterthanlivemusic

And happy he was, 45 years later.

The only downside? How the heck will the Bad Job Boys ever top this night?

And yes that damn new vintage crash cymbal, but that is another story from a book yet to be written. Holding title is “How to ruin your ears in 1978 seconds”. Anyone in for it?

  • … Kahuna Surfers & Hamburg Ramönes: A (little less) happy family!

… Kahuna Surfers & Hamburg Ramönes: A (little less) happy family!

Axel from Partysprenger Records not only does a DIY Label but also does DIY Marketing: Every time he puts out something special i get an email offer. So last year he persuaded me towards the Kahuna Surfers LP and it turned out to be a worthy catch.

    Their self-acclaim is pure understatement:

Kahuna Surfers, the perfect party band!

Think Hot summer nights, high waves, palms, sun and umbrella drinks. At the beach, Kahuna Surfers plays their nice mix of classic surf music like The Beach Boys with 60's harmonies, which are mixed together into a fantastic drink with a big dash of Punk Rock and Power Pop. You will definitely not be able to stand still. It is guaranteed to give you more taste!

Hey, Mr. Bartender pour me another Kahuna Surfers!
    Enjoy!

He lured them over to Germany and Hamburg too and paired them with the Hamburg Ramones for a Record Release Party, as the locals where putting out their 7th LP finally.

And whilst in Hamburg they also took the opportunity to surf the mighty river Elbe on the MS Hedi, playing Frau Hedis Tanzkaffee.

Thursday was sunny, the evening though turned more and more chill, still plenty of folks turned up to set sail with the Swedes – sold out i believe.

A Tiki Girl, Kapten Snuss and a misspelled Frau Heidi – Kahuna Surfers Setlist
    (Frau Hedi, Hamburg, 18.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de)

A quick inspection prior to the gig showed that the band came well prepared: A Tiki Girl, two sets and Kapten Snuss. So nothing could go wrong. Pity though that their 5er setup includes a keyboard and thus 4/5th of the band played broadside whilst the keyboard was facing down backwards the MS Hedi, 90° offset to the rest.

    Kahuna Surfers (Frau Hedi, Hamburg, 18.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Still, they all had steady feat and graced the audience with their own mix of feather light sugar coated beach pop (and remember, the “Pop” in “Pop Music” comes from popular). And it was delivered with both a twang, a smile and multi-vocal harmonies.

If there was something “odd” then the only thing was that for my liking there was just a little bit of thrust missing and definitely not enough surf guitar (and associated spring reverb). But the joy that came from the stage was a fitting balance.

    Kahuna Surfers (Frau Hedi, Hamburg, 18.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

They played two sets with the 2nd one being a wee bit better (as having some more songs on the thrust side). But all-in-all a perfect match to put those Nordic surfers out onto the chilly Elbe.

Extra bonus: They all where perfectly matched in stage attire, for that only i would take them on again (and was about to, next day).

Friday upstairs at the Hafenklang though started sad: I already heard through the grapevine that Ecki from the Hamburg Ramönes got hospitalized on Thursday and that made it in the end impossible for the band to play.

Partysprenger Axel and 3/4th of the Hamburg Ramones: Sad News! Get well soon Ecki!
    (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

The rest of the lot, who had plenty of Friends and Family around, nevertheless asked the audience to enjoy and all send best wishes to Ecki – i guess he would not have wanted anything else.

So instead of “just” seeing a support stint from the Kahuna Surfers the audience was getting yet again two sets, slightly re-arranged. There was an initial disappointment though:

The consistent stage attire was not achieved: The drummer – who was a stand-in for the original drummer that could not travel due to medical reasons – only was equipped with a single shirt and could not match the rest. Damn!

On the sound side the whole setup was much better, the room and the PA sure helped to get a much better sound (and much better feeling of thrust) towards the audience.

For the first set they played with sub-optimal lights: Initially the stage lights where left on, once they where switched off they played almost in the dark.

    Kahuna Surfers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

In the break Axel and a volunteer (plus a bar stool) took on to rearrange the spots that where all geared towards the dancing floor. After that there was a much better visibility on stage.

What did surprise me was that they where able to emit even more fun, smiling and joy from the stage than already on the MS Hedi. Sure one and the other joke as part of the show was repeated but all-in-all it was a near perfect set.

    Kahuna Surfers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

In the end the Hamburg Ramönes where not fully absent from the stage, once California Sun was next they jumped to action and made it a happy family delivery – listen up youth, that was not rehearsed:

Loads of applause and by and large happy people around me (though the Hafenklang felt only like half full). I liked it, me mates liked it and i think i will see them again. Best setting maybe is indeed a warm summer evening, on the beach, with all the ingredients that the enchanting Chinchilla Vanilla put on heavy rotation:

Beach, Sun and Sex (and not Beer; as me mate Frank insisted).

I hope they sold plenty of records and shirts, as i had my LP already i resorted to the new Hamburg Ramönes LP called “Harvey”. You can get your copy from the Band or from Partysprenger! It sports a great cover done by Paulinho from Flanders 72 fame, go check him out (or see him and Flanders 72 at Punk Rock Raduno Six)!

Nice to see Kahuna Surfers twice (and get assurance that they are not a one hit wonder) and really sad that the Hamburg Ramönes had an ill fated record release party. But health of us aging old punk rockers is a – at least for me – not a thing to take lightweight.

Hope Ecki gets well soonest and they can have another go at presenting the record live!

As always … buying records at the show helps DIY bands!

On the more funny side: One of me mates, who has the season ticket next to me at the Millerntor, decided to boycott the show “as the Hamburg Ramönes are the house band of Teutonia“. Football trouble even within the family, Silly, ain’t it?
