… a killer debut, a solid farewell and a triumphant return: The best show 2019, so far?

It took the Descendents and the Mighty Mighty BossTones 21 fucking years to come  back to Hamburg … and it took the mighty D.I. 25 years to be back at Hamburg shores, a place that in the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90s was full of D.I. devotees.

So when the news came around that they hit Europe the Hafenklang was sold out quickly: It was a Friday evening in Summer, they paired with Poison Idea on their farewell stint and had with Yard Bomb the hardest and corest local support that you could wish for. People came from far and also near – the Hamburg lot was in full contingent and even Bremen showed up in force.

The unpleasant support the support slot was for Causes from Hanover, they had to lure 200+ people drinking and chatting outside the Hafenklang into the main room and in front of the stage.

    Causes (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

They did not succeed. I gave it a try, as i am always keen to see new bands. But they just did not touch my soul with their rather dark punk. They also looked a wee bit static on the stage, so i had to let go for another beer and another chat.  But by all means, make up your own mind and check them out.

With a swift changeover it was time for Yard Bomb, currently for me the hottest hard core unit on the local circuit. And they kicked of like this:

Their drummer was absent with leave, so their old drummer filled in after leaving 5 years ago to give them the opportunity to excel on the same stage as D.I. and Poison Idea.

They had a rooster of 14 songs prepared and from the kick off it felt that they wanted to shove it up the audience ears with no fills and no frills: Net they clocked in at 21:05 for the 14 songs, that is a near perfect 80 seconds per song on average (and allowed for 10 seconds between songs).

Yard Bomb - Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019)
Yard Bomb – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019)

Their visual on stage is still a nice spread: Rolf yells, moans and groans and has every muscle full of relentless energy, Benny smiles and hammers the bass and Sven has his guitar strapped high and generates both knife sharp chords and a chaotic swirl. And all of that backed by solid drumming (though sometimes you could make out that they most likely did not have too many hours in rehearsal together).

    Yard Bomb (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

I loved the energy, i loved the mu-sick-al Blitzkrieg and the take no prisoners attitude. At times i even had the feeling they would overtake themselves but i saw a couple of smiles on the stage so they looked all happy with the effort.

    Yard Bomb (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

They have a veritable hit (one of my top 10 songs by a Hamburg band) and that one sounded in a speed up trash’n’burn version like this:

    Sing-a-long to this beauty:

Milhouse will be a better man
    Next 40 years from now
    Don't smoke
    Don't drink
    Don't fuck around
    Everything is turning up
    On Milhouse right now

    Will be a better man
    The next 40 years
    Will be a better man
    Don't smoke
    Don't drink
    Don't fuck
    Don't curse

    Milhouse!

If you ask me for my humble opinion (and that comes with 40 years of listening to that genre called widely Punk or Hardcore Punk or even Hardcore) that is perfect song that you would think came out of California or Washington DC say 1983 – but not out of Hamburg, in the year 2014 resp. 2019. Kudos Yard Bomb – you got me!

That Poison Idea finally say farewell in contrast was less than a surprise. Too many in’s and out’s, too many health and other problems. And sure losses like the passing of Pig Champion  But Jerry kept things together like on this final tour, where a last minute change had to be done to guitars.

    Poison Idea (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

What the audience got was nevertheless a great showcase of the wide variety of the Poison Idea output (that actually stretches from 1983 to 2016 and still puts #recordcollectorsarepretentiousarseholes to a stunning test in getting a complete collection).

And how did it sound? It sounded quite well:

The strength of the set to me was that for more than half of the songs the audience carried the band forward with all the singing, dancing and energy – one final time both Poison Idea and Hamburg where indeed united in their loved for hard & cheap.

    Poison Idea (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

Jerry smiled a couple of times and thanked people for coming out. I’d like to reply that this was the minimum to do, they have been around for me almost all the time (and stock 18 record in my collection) and some of their output is definitely stuff that i will carry into the elderly home (once the rest of the collection is auctioned off to pay the fees).

Thanks Jerry for all the years of effort!

By now it was quite late (10 minutes to midnight) and there was still the headliner to come back on us after 25 years.

And this is how D.I. came back:

They came back as a 4 piece (though i heard rumors they would come with two guitars, did not get to check out more detail) and with a lineup that has been together now since 2003 (so for a while, though it is Casey who has been around ever since and that is since 1981).

    D.I. (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

Their strength sure is their early output until 1988 – for us over here the stuff was just like honey: Sweet. Sticky. And of quality. Little did we know over here about the many line up changes, there must have been like 20 different line-ups with Casey being the only constant.

But what it always had was a quality O.C. Hardcore sound. That cool blend of various bits of Rock, Punk, Surf and all of that neatly given some speed (in both senses).

    D.I. (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

Those with an eye for the more historic side of Punk Rock sure know that Casey was the original drummer for the Adolescents and as such he took great pleasure in the design of both the Yard Bomb debut 12″ and the matching T-Shirt. He even took it on stage and used it to deliver praise for the late Steve Soto (and that was echoed from the audience with some For Steve! returns).

And his old Adolescents classic (actually, again for those versatile in Punk Rock History, a Detours song by Messrs Royer and Agnew) was his own ode to his old mate Steve – here is Amoeba, 2019 Version by D.I.:

To no surprise the audience went ape shit. Loads of dancing, loads of singing and across the board very bright smiles not only in front of the stage but also to the back of a fully packed Hafenklang.

The most smiles actually came from the stage: Joey Tatar on drums not only does every trick in the drummer book with his sticks (and then some more not in any book), he also pulls faces left, right and center. Once you fixed your eyes on him you could not let go – it was utmost fun!

D.I. - The Drummer (utmost fun and pulling faces galor (c) gehkacken.de 2019)
D.I. – The Drummer (utmost fun and pulling faces galor (c) gehkacken.de 2019)

They came back more than once and they gave the audience everything and a wee bit more. As one of me mates noted it is not custom for US bands to come back for an encore – but coming back three times and late into the night, that is just class.

    D.I. (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 19.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

With all that fun, all that joy there where also toned down moments, moments where Casey (a heroin victim himself) praised those who made a step away from drugs (and never returned to them) and he was also careful enough to explain that “Richard hung himself” is actually not a fun song but a hard truth. As such he urged people to take care of those around him. Well done Casey, well done.

Casey’s own issues with drugs have been in the news, up to and including not so fun family moments that made the press. His advise offered in an interview was simple: “My advice… hard drugs will ruin you and your music, unless you live in Amsterdam. Then you will write good music, but die young.

They played until 01:00 and they left behind a still full, fully sweaty and extraordinary happy Hafenklang. On top they also had class manners, thanking each audience member that came forward for a chat.

I resorted back to the bar for beer, to the merch for two Yard Bomb 12″ (that i have to picture below in color … because of the cover, sure thing) and a Poison Idea T-Shirt for me love. And more beer. And more chats.

I can only urge you to get this beauty upon real release (that’ll be 27.09.2019) or attend the record release party at the Hafenklang on 02.10. (with the mighty Razors and Suck). Make sure you buy like me an extra one to make it a gift. Try to convince someone outside of Hamburg of Yard Bomb! Mine will go south and i am looking forward for the feedback…

…  and with a broad smile i finally took off home, yet again through empty streets on my short stroll uphill and home.

Whilst i was on the way to bed, the docks yonder still kept working on the cruise ship – i wonder when that finally will be done with the makeover.

Thanks for Hafenklang for setting this up and thanks to lot and the bands for making it a very worthwhile entertainment. Farewell to Poison Idea, hello to Yard Bomb and dear D.I. – be back soon!

  • … what a raunchy night: Adolescents matched by The Bar Stool Preachers in speed!

… what a raunchy night: Adolescents matched by The Bar Stool Preachers in speed!

This was going to be a brilliant Friday night: Not only was i still on a high from the BossTones show on Tuesday but it was the Adolescents again (and ever since last years “For Steve” show i would make any effort to see them) and a little not so well kept secret appearance of a band from … Brighton. As in United Kingdom. From that Island yonder. A band that loves Hamburg. And is loved over here.

First on and with a slightly shortened set due to the extra addition was Punktucke, the unfortunate locals. I guess they where not too happy with this but as ever had to bite that bullet. They had not more than a 1/3 filled Hafenklang in front of them but they just did not care…

    Punktucke (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

A very precise and to the point set, for me deeply tied into a sound that also other bands from Hamburg do feature but with a fresh spin. They are not particularly my favorites but they got something meaningful to say, both on the mu-sick-al and lyric front.

Next on Fights & Fires from the UK. I saw them last year as support for Dag Nasty in Bremen and noted “The mu-sick to me was exactly that type of music that can’t choose what it wants to be“. This time they sported a wee bit less hair but they still came across to me as “no fish no meat“.

    Fights & Fires (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

Others in the audience liked them from the start, got dancing and flying (and some of those even where on the guest list, so they do have local support). One of me friends was even so convinced that after the show he took home their record. They where friendly, they where hard and they where fast. Nothing wrong, just not my sound.

And that gave way to the Adolescents and they kicked in like this:

In front of the stage the sound was almost ok but somehow on stage the musicians did struggle. It took a couple of songs, some stops, some interactions with Witte (who did sound) and the removal of a mike in the kick-drum to get the stage sound acceptable for the band. And frank, also in front of the stage it sounded better.

Adolescents - Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019)
Adolescents – Set list (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019)

They got a lengthy set list prepared and they pushed forward almost relentlessly. They definitely where not going to take any prisoners this evening and they knew that someone else would mop the ground with the audience to finish off – so they did let go!

    Adolescents (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

They also traded some memories, like towards Jürgen Bitzcore (who to my surprise was in attendance) and a song long ago played for the first time in Hamburg. And they had people relentlessly dancing and singing along – to the known hits and also to the lesser known songs.

    Adolescents (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

If there is one item that stood out for me then it is how tight, how fast and how energetic they where. It was thoroughly a killer set of you ask me and they never did hold back.

It was sure thing not possible to top last years show from a feelings perspective, the love & appreciation vibes last year where to heavy. But this night they topped it from a mu-sick-al perspective. Just puuuurfect!

    Adolescents (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

You can see it from the many picture, loads of broad smiles and loads of fun on and off stage. And that forever makes a good gig, that simple recipe!

Whilst the Adolescents resorted from stage around midnight there was still one more fun item to enjoy: The Bar Stool Preachers had a day off in their schedule and needed a place to sleep. Hence they booked themselves into Hotel Hafenklang for a few hours and payed with some stage time.

That sunny lads from Brighton, who had all fun during the other bands, took the stage like this (in self made and highly stylish gaffa makeup):

From the first chord two items where clear: Compared to Tuesday as support for the BossTones on the big stage of the Freiheit they injected some nitro and supercharged the engine in what felt they were trying to match them Adolescents in speed.

The Bar Stool Preachers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

Maybe the just did let go? I definitely like this raunchy & speedy version of the Preachers more and it sure fitted the location and the evening so much more. And raunchy and speedy it was also with bodies flying left right & center, up to and including crashing into me mates beer.

... when Beer gets hurt the fun ends!
… when Beer gets hurt the fun ends!

Someone should have pressed that big red “STOP” buzzer – you can’t hurt a beer glas, that is very very unfair! But the mood was fun on a Friday night out so nobody was prosecuted and me mate simply strolled back to the bar: Knock it back and ‘ave another one!

The Bar Stool Preachers (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 05.07.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

In record breaking time the Preachers did drive full speed ahead through their set, always at the risk of speeding. Outside they would have been fined, inside they just got love, showers of love.

They finished their set off at around 01:00 (against a 02:00 curfew backstage) and if i am not mistaken their alarm clock was set to 05:00 as they had a long drive on Saturday in front of them. Still, they put everything in and they got they audience still going – see yerself:

Wohahow – Bar Stool Preachers. Full. Stop. Thanks lads for the surprise addition and the extra umpf, the extra speed and the extra fun.

I was thoroughly done after a long day and took the gentle uphill stroll home through a peaceful and quiet city with almost no traffic. Just over at the docks, some folks still did the good old hammer work.

... strolling home through the empty streets and the docks never sleep!
… strolling home through the empty streets and the docks never sleep!

The Adolescents had it a wee bit easier, their last date on this EU Tour was Berlin on Saturday and then back home. In this form they can come back every year (and every year i will put a little memory in … For Steve!).

  • … what a perfect debut album: Nasser Hund launch their LP!

… what a perfect debut album: Nasser Hund launch their LP!

Whilst i did get to see the record earlier, the formal record release party for the Nasser Hund debut album sure thing was the day where i was going to buy it. No matter what! The date was long awaited and thus the elderly Punk Rock connoisseurs from Hamburg did pack the Hafenklang upstairs. Yet again one of the “i know everyone in the audience” evenings.

Fun moment on my short stroll down to the Hafenklang was bumping into the Adolescents, who used the band apartment to stay over before continuing on to their first EU date in Denmark. I tried to encourage them to show up later for Nasser Hund but i think they ran for food and did not make it (at least i did not note them later on).

To warm (and charm) people up Sixteen Again took the support slot. Sixteen Again? What is that? A kiddy band? Nope – Sixteen Again are a long contemplated idea by Helge (of Jam Today fame) to only play … Buzzcocks. And since the sad passing of Pete Shelley this is even more a very valid tribute.

So with the words of Pete here is the outline:

Feeling like I'm almost sixteen again
Layin' 'round doing nothing like all my friends
Play it cool don't get angry count up to ten
Just like I was sixteen again
Everybody gets the lowdown right from the start
Everybody gets the showdown right from the heart
But that's all that's on the menu and life's a la carte
    I don't know

Things in life are not played for keeps
If it makes you happy it'll make you weep
And if you want some more practical advice
If you can't think once then don't think twice
'Cause things won't seem so nice
You'll wish you were sixteen again
    Oh no

Feeling rather strange when you're sixteen again
Things don't seem the same the past is so plain
This future is our future this time's not a game
    This time you're sixteen again

Always on your own when there's nobody else
Asking myself would I be someone else
But after all life's only death's recompense
    I don't know

Things in life are not played for keeps
If it makes you happy it'll make you weep
And if you want some more practical advice
If you can't think once then don't think twice
'Cause things won't seem so nice
You'll wish you were sixteen again
    Oh no

Look at me here I am for your eyes
Mirrored proof of what you recognize
I know I never will feel quite like you
And I know you won't treat me right till I do
But at least we'll know it's true
    That we're sixteen again
    Oh no

Feeling rather strange when you're sixteen again
Things don't seem the same the past is so plain
This future is our future this time's not a game
    This time you're sixteen again

Always on your own when there's nobody else
Asking myself would I be someone else
But after all life's only death's recompense
    I don't know

Look at me here I am for your eyes
    Mirrored proof of love's suicide
I know I never will feel quite like you
And I know you won't treat me right till I do
But at least we'll know it's true
    That we're sixteen again
    Oh no

    Sixteen again
    Sixteen again

I guess that one was true for many in the audience, i would be bang right back in 1980 when Stiff Little Fingers played the Markthalle for my 16th birthday.

    Sixteen Again (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 14.06.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

And that is Nic, Helge, Ingo and Koshi and they devote themselves to the times of perfect Power-Pop, when love songs did matter for young punk rockers. From the vast œuvre  of the Buzzcocks they made a short but fine selection for their first live appearance.

Sixteen Again - Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 14.06.2019)
Sixteen Again – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 14.06.2019)

You could sense some nervousness on stage and within the audience at the start but with the 3rd song already they had convinced the audience (and themselves). Promises is indeed not an easy song by Messrs Diggle & Shelley to master  but here it comes in all beauty (and remember it dates back to 1978):

If you, like myself, have the urge to sing-a-long, here is your chance:

Ah, loving you is easy, you are on my side
We play the game strictly to our rules
We led the field, a love affair
Which made all other lovers fools

    Oh
How can you ever let me down? (how)
How can you ever let me down? (how)
How can you ever let me down?
These promises are made for us (oh-oh)

We promised that we'd always have time for each other
Whenever I needed you'd be there
We promised to be true, there'd be no other
We promised that for ever we would care

    Oh
How can you ever let me down? (how)
How can you ever let me down? (how)
How can you ever let me down?
These promises are made for us (oh-oh)

    We had to change
Oh, but you stayed the same
    You wouldn't change
    Oh, what a shame

'Cause loving you's not easy, you're not on my side
We play a game with two sets of rules
We lead the field in a love affair
    Ah, strictly meant for fools

    Oh
Why did you ever let me down? (now)
Why did you ever let me down? (now)
Why did you ever let me down?
Those promises were made for us (oh-oh)

You never have any time for me
Whenever I need you, you're not there
You've never been true and it's plain to see
The fact is you never really cared

    Oh
Why did you ever let me down? (now)
Why did you ever let me down? (now)
Why did you ever let me down?
Those promises we made for us (oh-oh)

Deal! And with every song that followed the audience took more and more over the singing, up to the point where Helge noted that he got a line wrong (and the audience right). Perfect entertainment! Let’s hope that this set gives them the confidence to do more – i’d love to see more, i’d love to see them even more outgoing!

For Nasser Hund it left an enthusiastic audience, eager to get them and the songs from their record. And this is how they kicked off:

In my book this is down as a near perfect pop song: Drive, great lyrics with a near perfect rhyme (take “Sie haben ihren Eltern nie verziehen, sie lächeln nur auf Fotografien“) , some great surprising chords and … 2 minutes long. If that ain’t get them radio play, what else would?

And for sure they have more of that quality, like this one on friendship:

Great stuff, hard hitting and every chord, every beat and every hook by the bass in it’s place. You can see that Jan, Kay and Arne all made their peace with mu-sick: They just write and play because they love it. And that emits from both the stage and the record.

    Nasser Hund (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 14.06.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

But it is not only short and crisp songs they do, they can also do more complex and longer stuff, just like this one: Nasser Hund play Nasser Hund for you:

They got like 20 songs done with great applause from the audience, who more and more got into the groove, singing and dancing. And generally being joyful (though one attendant choose to be an outsider).

... pure enjoyment in front of the stage!
… pure enjoyment in front of the stage!

And after the 20 songs came encores and a repeat. And as the audience was still not fully satisfied it Arne decided to throw in a song from one of this other ventures (and that gives a full circle back to Sixteen Again, the desire to find love and the start of the evening):

    Power-Pop sing-a-long yet again. Class.

I can only urge you dear reader to now go out (or online) to get this record. A great DIY debut LP, perfectly styled and available now!

If your local record dealer does not have it – taunt him! If you reside off site then check Sounds Of Subterrania or Copasetic Mailorder to get it.

I guess the lot had more fun at the Hafenklang, i had to sneak out and meet some old work mates from London for some chatting and some serious alcohol at my favorite (local) bar. I was home at 03:00 and well loaded but with a broad smile on my face. And by now the record has spun twice on my player (and the 2nd copy i bought is in the mail as a gift to a person outside Hamburg).

Great night, great bands and great friends around me. Can it be any better? Nope, #thereaintnuthinbetterthanlivemusic!
