… energetic Swizz and surprisingly good mood: Nasty Rumours and Chelsea!

It was an almost summer Thursday evening and following a rather stressful day at the office i would have been down to the Hafenklang anyway to relax, most likely enjoying Nasty Rumours from sunny Switzerland upstairs. But they where paired with Chelsea and as such play downstairs.

Net it meant that i was there for the support and the 2nd band was to be a bonus. Last time i encountered Chelsea and Gene was mid 80s at the Markthalle and that was not really fun. The last time Gene graced Hamburg was at the Monkeys and he did leave an impression (of moaning) with me mates.

But as said, i was there for the lads from Berna so here is what i was about to get:

    Nasty Rumours – Setlist (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 11.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Their self acclaim is quite simple and tempting:

Inspired by late 70s legends such as The Boys, The Undertones and Buzzcocks these Swiss Punkrockers will feed you with Powerpop choruses that will stick in your head for weeks.

OK, ‘nough said. And indeed they have stolen every single trick from the cookbook of Pop (and remember the Pop in Pop Music comes from popular): Simple choruses on endless repeat, repeating first verse at higher speed later in the song and and and … too many to name them.

They deliver their own version of 1977 style Power Pop with loads of smiles, loads of fun and a decent amount of action. And it is all uptempo, though not breakneck speed.

    Nasty Rumours (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 11.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

I thoroughly liked it, though it is more for the live account – i do not own a record of them and i do not plan to buy one. But live, sure, they are an enjoyable force.

Here is “She’s Mental” from their 2022 long player:

    Perfect!

Now check them out yourself, they are absolutely entertaining and times flies by during their set easily. Some of my friends got a wee bit giggly upon their Swizz accent when speaking German but that only added to the fun. Those friends will also see them again with Briefs and Stitches later in July in Berlin, a near perfect package/match for sure.

Next Chelsea and to be very frank i did not expect much, though if it comes to the quality of song writing then basically – warning, nerd commentary incomming – SFLP2 (1979), SFLP 5 (1981) and specifically SFLP 7 (1982) are almost unbeaten.

Evacuate (SFLP 7, 1982) is not only a perfect post Punk album but also a near perfect song:

And it is one that remains a great sing-a-long. Actually penned down by Nic Austin, whom you see above happily shredding the guitar. So sing-a-long:

    Evacuate
    There is no time
    We'll all be dead
    On the stroke of Nine

    We play their rules
    In at half past eight
    I want more
    We know it's too late

Behold the people at King's Cross station
Queue for a taxi and they hope for freedom

    Council leaders
    Bust in the shelters
    Bolt the doors
    To keep out the people

    They all sit down
    On a comfortable settee
    Peer through the periscope
    And guess what they see?

Behold the people at King's Cross station
Queue for a taxi and they hope for freedom

    Evacuate
    There is no time
    We'll all be dead
    At the stroke of Nine

    Obey their rules
    In at half past Eight
    I want more
    We know it's too late

Behold the people at King's Cross station
Queued for a taxi and they hope for freedom.

Next to Nic there was another face on stage i recognized – i knew i had seen the Bass Player in another band but just could not get the reference. It needed a mate to point out that it is Mat Sargent, who played with Sham 69 and Splodgenessabounds.

They had another guitar (sporting great creepers) and a sturdy drummer too. And they had Gene, looking … ehm … a wee bit warn. But that did not stop him and in contrast to the last presence in Hamburg his voice was (almost) there and he was mainly in a positive mood.

    Chelsea (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 11.05.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

They played like 40 minute and left the stage, a mate was already joking that if they do not even play a full football half then he will account it under “loss”. But i guess specifically Gene needed a break and when they came back he said “Well, lets have another 10 songs” which i took as a joke – but it wasn’t!

And whilst they started somehow lala they now indeed where on fire, though some of the songs where speeded up a bit too much for my liking. Some of the more mid tempo songs are bangers in their own tempo and speeding them does not do them good in my ears.

And remember to sing-a-long to the chorus:

Don't try to stop me in my cause
I feel for the passionate kill
I'm tired of me getting pushed and messed around
I feel for the blank generation
I'm on fire (I'm on fire)

    ( (c) Illegal Songs, G. Myles 1979)

Frank – i was positively surprised and once Chelsea finished i joined the applause – well deserved! It was though only half full, exactly One Hundred Punks (running with total suss) graced the Hafenklang on this lovely Thursday evening. Good thing though was that i knew half of them and thus had some neat chats.

For Gene and this Chelsea venture all the best, if only he would be able to keep a rooster (ever since November 1976). But whatever on that front – Chelsea are still Chelsea and one of the few bands that where able to cultivate a Chelsea sound. Actually you can make out a Chelsea song, with ease, say in a playlist.

More chats after the show and a late gentle stroll uphill and home. As ever, #thereaintnuthinbetterthanlivemusic!

  • … rainy Mondays can still be fun: Pkew x3 minus 1!

… rainy Mondays can still be fun: Pkew x3 minus 1!

Monday evening upstairs at the Hafenklang is a fixture for Punk Rock, Table Tennis with a DJ – on this rainy evening it was Pkew Pkew Pkew (or Pkew x3 in short) from Toronto with The Muttnicks as surprising local support.

When i arrived rather early The Muttnicks where already on stage and about to kick into their short (20 min i guess) set. I never came across them prior, so a neat surprise. They play a very american style, somewhere between Pop Punk and eg. Bad Religion style of Hardcore.

For me the guitar is their main asset, next to be actually being very tight together. The singer is a bit of a a bad joke man, i had “oh yeah, loudmouth” more than once in my head.

    The Muttnicks (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 24.04.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

What they do they do very good, not 100% up my mu-sick-al alley but as noted, very tight. Check them out for yourself, within that they even have a veritable banger (that also came across live absolutely great):

    With excellent lyrics to sing-a-long:

you gotta man up, be tough, don't you fucking cry
I cry in public if it bothers you just get in line

you fruity faggot, you queer, you look fucking gay
your words might hurt me now but I won't change anything

    my decision, it's my decision
you want a piece of me
you won't make my decision for me
    my decision, it's my decision
you want a piece of me
you can't make my decision for me

you gotta get in line, shut up and never flinch
I demand everything for everyone, I won't shut up

you know the way you act you'll pay a fucking price
I don't care what it costs, I maintain against the grain

    my decision, it's my decision
you want a piece of me
you won't make my decision for me
    my decision, it's my decision
you want a piece of me
you can't make my decision for me

If they come across again i will definitely have another look at them.

Next Pkew Pkew Pkew, this time round as “Pkew x3 minus 1”. My mate with me that night had seen them as a 4 piece at the Booze Cruise Festival and was full of praise for them: Energy, drive, humor and all of that paired with enjoyable songs and multi-vocal singing.

How did it sound as a 3 piece? Like this:

Where The Muttnicks where tight, Pkew where actually hand-in-glove. Their sound is full of breaks, speed variations and a zillion other tricks paired with multi-vocal singing and … harmonies. Plenty of harmonies.

    Pkew Pkew Pkew (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 24.04.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Looking up some of their stuff i make a wild claim that they sing about Pizza, Beer and Skateboarding but that may just me too short sighted. They also have some wider themes, even down to outright poetry in the song title: “Let The Bridges We Burn Light The Way“.

They played for like 45 Minutes and then prepared for table tennis with this encore:

Nice one, making that Monday fixture yet again of value. And frank, me mate was not wrong, i can see how they can give a Pizza and Beer loaded Booze Cruise audience a great moment!

  • … they deserved it: Sold out for Grade 2!

… they deserved it: Sold out for Grade 2!

This was on many fronts a surprise gig. Sold out – a positive surprise to me. Grade 2 at the Hafenklang – an upfront surprise to me. Paired with Death By Stereo – wtf? Also a surprise to me was that some trusted mates where absent, some with the rather weird inclination towards Grade 2 that they have been watered down by Tim Armstrong. Really?

Indeed Grade 2 not gracing the Monkeys and/or the Indra was a surprise, but Sam was happily attending at the Hafenklang. That they were paired with Death By Stereo was quite a surprise to me, though wide choices in pairing normally give positive surprises.

Death By Stereo is the other band of Efrem Schulz, who also sings for Voodoo Glow Skulls and Manic Hispanic. And frank, it is on an opposite spectrum and unfortunately i feel far from home in that territory.

    Death By Stereo (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 27.03.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

They are outspoken and put no stop on hating the bad sides of their home country. Some of their songs have elements i can relate to but many flirt with a mix of a bit of hardcore and loads of metal, including splitting vocals into high tuned (almost female) singing and muffled deep growling.

What they do they do well and they do add some fun moments (including the strings resorting to the bar for a drink whilst continuing to play thanks to wireless connectivity). They where also thankful to the audience from whom their got a fair share of reaction (and some where only there to see them, they left once Death By Stereo left the stage). Not my thingy though – but make your own choice.

Next and with minimal setup tricks Grade 2, who still look young (if i recall correctly they where like 16 when they played Hamburg for the first time). But whilst they do look young they have matured so much as individual musicians and as a band.

They are now under the production wings of Tim Armstrong (and accompany Rancid on their 2023 Europe tour) for the most recent effort and that is far from being watered down – it is actually a nice mix of short banger and sing-a-long songs.

For me they worked from the start, humble but well versed on filling a stage and engaging an audience. And they know how to write songs that are never dull, never boring and have an edge without needing to have that standing out.

    Grade 2 (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 27.03.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

As with many others the Covid hiatus gave them ample time – they used it wisely to perfect songs and then get ’em recorded and produced by Tim Armstrong in LA. It is a worthy effort that does not deserve to be called “toned-down” at all. Far from mate!

What was also fun to see was that Jacob (Bass) and Sid (Guitar) constantly swapped position on stage and when Jacob was standing on Sid’s side he was operating the foot pedal for effects for Sid just like he was operating his own – that shows how tight they are as a band and much they are a well oiled machine.

They played an hour and a bit, had plenty of movement and sing-a-long from the audience, it was a fun show to watch. At the end came a cover (Where Eagles Dare from the Misfits, though i got to say that there are even better redemptions) and a quick encore.

And that turned my positive surprise into a well deserved one. Grade 2 are worth many efforts to see them, they are humble and unpretentious lads that continue to be very approachable. After the show thay handed thanks to most of the people leaving the Hafenklang and passing by the Merch table.

From where i sit i wish they have big success now, even and specifically in the US of A so that they can do a decent living off the mu-sick.

Also great that the Hafenklang can start to count on sold out shows again, they also need this after thew 2 1/2 years of not being able to bring the dough home needed to run the club.

    More of this please!

PS: My loveliest song of Grade 2 remains this one – i have every ounce of trust that they will stick to it!
