… .. på vej til K-Town disse bånd har ramt Hamborg hard. Hard Kerne var i huset!

Hamburg is gifted. Gifted with all sorts of things but sure thing with location, location, location. So bands playing K-Town Hardcore in København can do a nice stopover in Hamburg and that tradition is now in the 3rd year. And yet again a bargain, 12€ for 6 bands is a treat. And as the Hafenklang can serve two stages the changeover is quick, smart and allows the bands to play a wee bit longer.

    Eel (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

Start was with Eel from sunny Pittsburgh, PA – a lot that seems to have sucked up the japanese version of H/C. Fast, hard and with loads of screaming. Fun fact: The singer of Eels did dance through the sets of all the other bands, stage-diving included and generally enjoyed himself to the max – nice one!

Great start, though the Hafenklang still was rather empty – people just do not like a 20:30 kick-off it seems.

    Sex Dwarf (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

Next upstairs Sex Dwarf from Stokholm, SE – they where dubbed as “Raw Noise” and indeed their show was exactly that in fast forward and with a singer that yelled at the audience like no tomorrow. Raw, just raw!

Downstairs again the first “highlight” (if i may), Tørsö from Oakland who put themselves as “D-Beat Punk” which is just another label that would rather fend me off. But glancing over the stage i got rather exited: Great stage backdrop, smart looking members and half of them female. Now i got exited – they kicked off like this:

Yep, that is to my liking. And as a band they seemed to be very much tighter as their predecessors and mu-sick-ally more gifted indeed.

And as they did stick with me I went on to tape another smasher. By now the Hafenklang also was a wee bit more crowed (though still too empty compared to some other shows) and they got their fair share of applause.

Yep, that has set a good mark! Last year the “Exotic Band of the Day” award went to Daily Ritual from SG, this year Scumraid from South Korea took that tag.

    Scumraid (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Scumraid (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

Boy, they looked different and indeed they sounded very different. A high pitched wall of noise with a tiny little girl behind the drums. Quite stunning and by all means not my thing. Nope. But that is the beauty of the setting, you do get exposed to stuff you would pass by and finally have to make up your mind.

Wandering downstairs the audience was … stunned. 3 Kids where on stage that somehow looked like having grabbed the instruments from a bands and jammed along. Strange. And boy those kids looked young, 18 and maybe just a little bit more (though for us over 50 oldpunks hard to make out).

    Protester (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Protester (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

Yes, they had another kid hopping on the stage and singing. And how did they sound like?

Ups, that is straight edge D/C hardcore indeed. Wow – these kids know their stuff and they serve it indeed in style. The only item that did not really work was the singer trying to look hard and angry as in angry young man: It just did not work. Never mind, they took the audience by storm and got the biggest cheers so far!

    Lecherous Gaze (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Lecherous Gaze (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

Rushing back upstairs for the next exiting band my fun was slowed down: Lecherous Gaze tried to take the stage but where slowed down by their main guitar hero – either by a not working amp or (my feeling) by him being unhappy with the guitar sound and requiring more (though already blocking half the stage with his sound effects). After much back and forth and an additional amp being pulled they kicked off:

Their singer styled himself as a hunchback (he was not) and that guitar hero styled himself as a young Greg Ginn. On top of that they had Gimli, son of Glóin, as drummer. They claim “…to bring dangerously heavy rock back to the masses” and cite MC5 and Black Flag as their key influence. Nope guys, neither masses (plenty of people left the upstairs stage early) nor style (by all counts) – sorry for that!

With that disappointment i went downstairs only to have a déjà vu: Two of these Protester kids where back on stage, the singer on drums and the drumer on bass. Next to them a new kid on guitar. Strange …

OK, they had someone jumping on stage to sing (and grabbing the wrong mike) with them too!

    Red Death (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Red Death (Hafenklang, Hamburg, 16.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

Now we where in it for something serious: I would guess they blend trash and hardcore and thus can be dubbed trashcore but i am not in tune with the mu-sick-al styles handed down today so i can be utmost wrong.

By now it was quite late and some of the good folks had already left. They missed quite an energetic set that at least did not venture into metalcore (that would have pissed me off i guess).

And then, as late as 01:00 in the morning Red Death played just another encore and finished off the 3rd edition of the K-Town warm up at the Hafenklang for good.

We stayed for records and merch and more talking, so i was home late and quite tiered during work on Friday. But i work from home and can stretch the rules of working quite far so that was ok.

Eager to see more next year and sure ok if that includes bands i do not like – still i get to see a lot for next to nothing. Let’s hope that next year more people try that surprise pack – you won’t be disappointed.

  • … in search of the 5th Undertone: A party band in high speed mode!

… in search of the 5th Undertone: A party band in high speed mode!

In Hamburg we have a saying that goes along the lines of “…if a party is in doubt throw in some Undertones and folks will dance and sing-a-long” which is pretty much a true statement: Rarely a band from “back then” has material that is as crisp, almost pop like and literally transporting a smile into peoples faces.

As such it was no surprise that a rather large crowd was up for just another “fond memories” show at the Markthalle, where plenty of people felt like in a time machine: The sample around them was the same as in 1981 when The Undertones played Hamburg for the very first time.

    DJ TIKIBOY (Markthalle Hamburg, 09.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

DJ Tikiboy kicked off the proceedings and flooded the empty Markthalle with some neat sounds – but as most others i stayed at the bar and talked to many of me fellow oldpunks. I heard some reggae tunes, some NDW – no punk (at the request of The Undertones actually).

Quite early on at 21:00 The Undertones entered and kicked it off like this:

Unpretentious, smart and full of energy! And from the first vocals some of the doubts of some folks in the audience where settled: It is The Undertones and they do work sans Feargal – and that sine 1999 actually. So get used to it! Already now quite some sing-a-long in the audience and smiling faces. This is the real deal!

    The Undertones (Markthalle Hamburg, 09.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
    The Undertones (Markthalle Hamburg, 09.06.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

And without further ado they entered into what can only be described as the perfect party set: 34 songs in 90 Minutes, that is about or just less than 2 Minutes per song. What a perfect math! It really felt like an unstoppable party machine!

13 songs later they reached “Male Model“, just another smasher from the fantastic 1979 LP:

And the party just did not stop, on position 22 of the playlist comes “Billy’s 3rd“:

… and that is just another hit from that very same record that can stand the test of time. By now the audience was fully engaged, people moving, singing and a large part of the contingent had a smile cemented into their faces. Just great to see how Hamburg loved them (and odd that they do not come over on a more frequent schedule).

After a short break they came back and started they 10 song encore like this:

What can i say more than they know their trade and happiness was all over.

And down to song 27, can they still pull something special? Yes indeed – it was hats off to just another Northern Irish legend: “Just another Teenage Rebel” from The Outcasts was thrown at the crowd and they loved it!

Next it was time for just another sing-a-long stomper from long ago (and most likely the 7″ with the smartest footie cover of all times – Subbuteo, hint hint):

Cool as fuck and just confirming that they are … just … so … smart. Or smarter?

Yep, they are. Without the slightest doubt. Some might call it “lightweight” pop and dismiss it for that but i just phrase it out: pop is popular and by all means The Undertones play popular music. Period!

And once they where done and the playlist was completed they just could not stop and threw another classic – the critically underrated B-Side of “Jimmy Jimmy” was to finish the set finally of:

How cool is to start such a show with a 7″ A-Side and then finish it off with the B-Side of that same single? I do like books and movies that at the end come back all the way to the start, that is a cool way of telling a story indeed but on stage? Who has dared that before? Fuckin’ hell, The Undertones just made my day!

And the search for the 5th Undertone? That was on because Damian O’Neill played his guitar like a left winger that plays tied to the sideline: He stood way left on stage and somehow hidden for some parts of the audience (and you will just about see his head on some pics – he did not seek the stage light!).

In the end that old saying from Hamburg stood strong: If you have a party throw in some Undertones – the sun will come up, people will smile and dance. Thank you lads!

PS: Thanks for Christiane (of Gerd fame) and her memorabilia collecting habits we also have the full playlist (sans “Mars Bars” at the end). Now all be jealous!

  • … taking a cruise in Berlin with the Sex Pistols and The Jam – What an EXPERIENCE!

… taking a cruise in Berlin with the Sex Pistols and The Jam – What an EXPERIENCE!

Me Mate Frosch reports from the Berlin away game of Jam Today:

My wife and I had to decide early on at the end of last year if we were going to take a trip to Berlin 1st weekend of May to watch our friends from Jam Today joining the Sex Pistols Experience on a boat trip on the river Spree in Berlin. And guess what? We took the challenge!

So we found ourselves standing at a pier in Berlin on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon greeting Jam Today along with Johnny Rotter, Kid Vicious, Paul Crook and Steve Clones arriving back from their 1st sold out tour that day.

Jam Today (MS Stralau, Berlin 08.05.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
Jam Today & Johnny Rotter having a laugh (MS Stralau, Berlin 08.05.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

The little cruise ship “MS STRALAU” has space for up to 200 people but only 100 tickets were sold each trip. So it was pretty spacious and relaxed, no hassle at all to get a few drinks to start with. We had a quick chat with our friends in Jam Today before they already had to take the stage again.

It was their first proper show with a new drummer and latest after a couple of songs when they kicked into smash hits like “In The City”, “Down In The Tube Station At Midnight” or “A Town Called Malice” the party was on its way and a good part of the audience had fun and danced.

It would never match Jam Today’s boat trip in Hamburg on the river Elbe almost 7 years ago though – it is just different when there’s all friends and old companions in the audience eg. a home game… By all means try to get tickets and come to Hamburg if they are ever planning to do a trip on the “MS HEDI” again!

Just from peoples outfit it was crystal clear that most of them where here to see the infamous Sex Pistols Experience (SPE). Old School Punks, 40 and above, wherever you looked, but also some younger ones, including a perfect copy of Soo Catwoman – nice outfit!

Soo Catwoman (MS Stralau, Berlin 08.05.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)
Soo Catwoman (MS Stralau, Berlin 08.05.2016 (c) gehkacken.de)

The SPE made a start into their show and graced the little “stage” at the end of the boat with their perfect Sex Pistols looks. Since seeing them in Hamburg for the 1st time a couple years back I’m deeply impressed by their show. Having just missed the Sex Pistols in Hamburg January 1978 as they broke up little more than a week before, it was the closest and best thing to seeing them at the time.

Still honouring “Never Mind The Bollocks” as the best and most important album of all time I would have never wanted to see the “real” Sex Pistols when they reunited (that proved seeing John Lydon with PIL playing a horrible and extremely boring show some days later in Hamburg…).

I rather watch the SPE and as Steve Jones apparently put it: “They really are the Sex Pistols – superb”.

Half way into the set and the floor of the boat was soaked with beer and people started slipping and crashing to the floor like flies. What a great and wild show, the best I have seen the SPE play yet.

I had my moment when I pointed at Johnny Rotter during “Problems” and screamed that the “problem was him”. So he started pointing at everyone else, good fun and all around great guys in the band. And as usual it was “No Fun” that had to end a fantastic set and a terrific afternoon on the river Spree.

Looking forward to see the SPE at Blackpool Rebellion this year, thanks to Mario Irrek for setting this event up and Andi Incognito for the tickets – ‘til next time!

Thanks for that story Frosch and to Natali for pics and videos! And great to see Jam Today thrive in Berlin …
