Random Hand – Change of Plan (Riot Music RIOT008, 2007)

Holy shite, this is ska-core gallore! I do love my ska, i do love the Mighty Mighty BossTones (and you could call them “genre defying” to an extend) but this came from left-field.

From Keighley, a town and civil parish within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England comes Random Hand and they are a true contender for throwing an energetic and loud dancing party! Formed in 2002 and with 4 1/2 Albums and a grand live album under the belt they not only tour but also output to the max. Get to see them when you can, it is worth it!

    The verdict:

1977 – ok, tricky. SKA was part of the initial revolution but the added speed and metalic sounds not – i’d say “1977 2.0”
published by a cool lable – Riot Music, tick!
found in a cool shop – Burnout Hamburg, tick!
catching sound – this is a monster of a sound, has it all incl. cool trombone and sing-a-long chorus! Perfect!
The lyrics – about themselves and with tongue-in-check plus unique sing-a-long chorus!

    hey you!
    who me?
    what's your contribution?
we mess around with music fusion
    night times the big break
you tell me its not what society needs
    we're a band
    are you in demand?
well no not quite but the CDs in our van
    would you like to listen?
    its just what society needs

gotta see a CV to sell yourself
    tell me what you're worth
can i judge you on your ucas points?
    or your date or birth?
that's another thing you cant comprehend
    gotta like what monkey sees
would you like to know our status?
    and the honesty it brings

    WELL!

    we're scum, scum triumphant
bottom of the pile and screwing him for getting up
take pride in who you are
when they spoke our patience had enough
    we're scum
    we're scum
    we're scum
    WE'RE SCUM
and we're screwing him for getting up
    we've had enough
    YOU KNOW WE'RE SCUM

    (repeat without last line)

we're all laughing at jokes again
    forget about the time
i've heard that too much tension
    does damage to your spine
    no its ordinary hassle
can i just get through the day?
    its possible to mess around
and have some things to say

    SO!

    we're scum, scum triumphant
bottom of the pile and screwing him for getting up
take pride in who you are
when they spoke our patience had enough
    we're scum
    we're scum
    we're scum
    WE'RE SCUM
and we're screwing him for getting up
    we've had enough
    YOU KNOW WE'RE SCUM

(repeat repeat repeat and shout out loud: WE'RE SCUM!)

In 2010 it was re-released by Bomber Records/Our Music with a much better artwork and with the added bonus of the “On the march” EP:

Random Hand - Another Change Of Plan (Bomber Music/Our Records UXR 003, 2010)

The recording itself is already a mighty beast – tune up realy loud:

but live it is even better, ain’t it?

Reality 86'd - A 1986 Black Flag Documentary by Dave Markey (We Got Power Films)
Reality 86’d – A 1986 Black Flag Documentary by Dave Markey (We Got Power Films)

Let’s be honest – this is Black Flag in their musicaly least loved stage … but this is how life on tour feels (and i can relate to that from traveling with bands back in 80s and early 90s).

“Three bands and crew (a combined total of 13 individuals), 2 Dodge Ram extended cab vans, one equipment truck, one PA system traverse the continental US for six months. A road documentary shot from the inside of the last Black Flag tour ever (the 1986 “In My Head” US tour.)  Greg Ginn along with Henry Rollins, Cel Revulta, and Anthony Martinez comprise the final line up of the band. Featuring behind the scenes proceedings and live performances from Black Flag, Painted Willie, and Gone (Ginn’s side project, then featuring Sim Cain and Andrew Weiss (later of the Rollins Band) . David Markey was along for the entire trip as the drummer / singer for Painted Willie (with Phil Newman & Vic Makauskas), documenting the six month tour with his Super-8 camera as it happened. Also features roadie Joe (“Planet Joe”) Cole, soundmen Davo Claasen and Dave “Ratman” Levine, and the tour manager who kept it all together, Mitch Bury. A crucial turning point in American underground rock. The end of the line for a trail blazing American band.”
