… just thankful: The last of a great DIY and LOCAL series!

Good ideas do not last forever, but good ideas can make a lasting impact. The fine folks that keep the Punkrock Hamburg community going had such a good idea in 2019 and as ever with their ideas they made it real.

    Just DIY.

2025 and 4 editions done (annual, sure dropped during Covid times) it was now time for the 5th and last edition at its chosen home, the Stellwerk in Harburg.

Again DIY and local heroes only. And again sold out.

Blanker Hohn (Harburgs longest standing Punk Band) kicked it off, delivering a short but crisp set of their own Deutsch-Punk variant, up to and including lamenting about yours truly – thanks for that Oile!

    Blanker Hohn (Stellwerk, Harburg, 01.03.2025)

It is a genre i still can not relate to but Blanker Hohn by now (compared to 2019) i can relate to: They have modernized sound and delivery and they have a couple of songs that do speak to me. And they had their local fan base dancing in front of the stage, setting precedent for the rest of the evening.

Next Küken and they kicked off like this:

Black Air from their 3rd Album, what a wonderful heavy slab to get it going! And from there they took it down the Küken path: Just a full on barrage of their very own, stripped to the bone, bare metal, destilled … you name it, it will fit. As long as it comes with the annotation of “unique” and “Punk Rock”.

    Küken (Stellwerk, Harburg, 01.03.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

To my surprise they even had some of the lot dancing and i got to admit that indeed it felt like a huge amount of energy coming down and energizing the lot. Kudos, for me a near perfect and to the point set.

    Perfect for the occasion.

Them Haermorrhoids it took a wee bit longer to setup and once the finally kicked in it sounded … just not as perfect as i would have expected. Not sure what it was, amongst many little bits eg. the drums sounded a wee bit card board instead of “crisp”.

    The Haermorrhoids (Stellwerk, Harburg, 01.03.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

On top i somewhat had the feel they speeded through their set, tempo slightly upward. Luckily this rather slow song from their recent split EP with Proton Packs showcases what they are good at – here is C.I.A.:

Whilst i am normally somewhat enthusiastic when it comes to my Haermorrhoids live experience this set somewhat did not make it to the same level. It could also have been me, still mentally suffering from the FCSP loss vs. BVB earlier that afternoon, a loss that in the 2nd half was feeling like the team not having any energy anymore.

    The Haermorrhoids (Stellwerk, Harburg, 01.03.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

Whilst The Haermorrhoids relentlessly pushed ahead, i still had this nag in the back of my head that condensed somewhat to “uninspired“. But it may have been with me only, the rest of the lot was either frantically dancing away or enjoying it as far as i could see.

And the worst was yet to come: When i wanted to score their brand new 7″ after the show they (and the record) were all gone. Bugger!

Next the Headliner, the unstoppable Party Machine outta Hamburg Horn, with the following setlist:

Gerd – Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 01.03.2025)

And they kicked of with the song that Lemmy stole off them and gave to the Ramones – here is G.E.R.D.:

Bang! And from there it was like a match from heaven: A band with exclusively known sing-a-longs and a crowd eager to sing-a-long and dance it away, on the floor in front of the stage and beyond.

    Gerd (Stellwerk, Harburg, 01.03.2025)
    (c) gehkacken.de 2025

For some in the audience it was even too much (of booze) and they flippered along in the pit until a careful friend took them out (or they took themselves out). I happily stayed off booze and enjoyed it. And the joy was way beyond the mu-sick-al experience, the room felt full of joy (though towards the end of the Gerd set felt already no longer packed).

With some overtime and slightly after midnight Gerd called it a day, to almost triumphant cheers. And, as far as i could make out, Gerd also gained a few new supporters out of the local circuit.

I guess there could not be a better finish for the show and a better finishing line for that good idea formed in 2019.

I am damn sure that it will have a lasting impact (DIY and Local!) and i am also sure that we get something else as a surprise next.

If i could have my wish then it would be another Sommermärchen, in sunny beach setting at the Brewery. That was top notch entertainment in a perfect setting.

FANX Perry and Arne for pulling this through over the years, much appreciated!

  • … it’s been 40 years: Happy Birthday Blanker Hohn!

… it’s been 40 years: Happy Birthday Blanker Hohn!

It feels quite odd if the singer of a band points at you during the set to thank you for attending though “... he listens to other music normally“. It happened to me thanks to Oile from Blanker Hohn. Indeed the amount of “Deutsch Punk” in my collection (warning, #recordcollectorsarepretentiousarseholes incomming: 4.956 this morning according to Discogs) is neglecteable tiny and i tend to not go to shows showcasing it.

But Blanker Hohn, longest running Punk Band from Harburg (south of the mighty river Elbe), did throw a 40th Anniversary Bash at the Stellwerk so i gave it a chance.

For a start they were clever with their choice of support from north of the mighty river: The Razors paid tribute plus a cool addition from way back in U.E.D.L. as a real surprise.

Their split tape with Spiel 77, recorded down at their local youth center, was one of the mid 80s items done by mates because all their friends where in bands and they wanted one too.

U.E.D.L. Split-Tape with Spiel 77 from 1985 … that is all what remained!

It did not create a lot of success but as friends they largely stayed around, continued to play low key every once in a while and never went anywhere. But they where contemporaries of Blanker Hohn and as such a fitting support.

For me it was the 2nd time to see them, if my memory serves me well i saw them back then at either a Youth Center or a School thingy in Bunny Hill or Bramfeld/Barmbek and … it was not a highlight as far as i recall.

Fast forward more than 40 years and to the Stellwerk. Fast forward to a show where a friend of Arne endured a 600 KM drive to actually see them. Fast forward to one of the situations where your expectations are lowest and …

… you get the surprise you never expected.

U.E.D.L. had a setlist of just 9 songs, played old ones at the start and got some lukewarm response. Then they got in new ones and with that me and me mates stopped chit-chatting and actually focused the attention to the stage.

    U.E.D.L. (Stellwerk, Harburg, 17.06.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

They more they played the more they both got into the groove, got self-assurance and actually had some tunes that fully worked: Deeply ground in a hard rocking sound (as on the positive side of hard rock), leaning toward what some dub nowadays “Working Class Rock” or “Street Rock“, there where some cool melodies, hooks and breaks.

Plus Arne delivering a fitting singing. Even on this single cover song it worked:

Wow – i really did not expect this one. No clue if this incarnation of U.E.D.L. will go anywhere but on this night, on this occasion – they simply took (let’s say half of) the crowd by storm. I will definitely seek out a chance to see them again, i do hope they stick to it for a little bit longer.

Without a lot of changeover the mighty Razors took the stage, trimming their set down and ending it with a barrage of covers.

    Razors – Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 17.06.2023 ( (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

The Stellwerk was crowded by this time, not sure if sold out but i guess 200+ folks being there. And the Razors had the lot from the first chord, a solid machine that delivered hits with ease.

What did strike me on this occasion was that i actually was looking out with joy to a single song:

An obscure 1979 Power Pop song from Scotland, of all places. Way ahead of times when it comes to guitar pop up North. And turned by the Razors into what i what call by now their signature song (bypassing Tommys Gang, that i always thought of as something like their signature tune).

    Enjoy:

Whereas The Headboys only ever got it to #45 in the UK Charts in 1979 i’d say that the Razors get the song to a new high.

A critic on the original has it all:

60’s inspired late 70’s jangly guitar pop with catchy tunes, irresistible rhythms & punchy chanted choruses from this great Scottish skinny-tie power-pop/new wave band that should’ve been big(ger).

Once i will win in the lottery and make my plan for a “1976 to 2026 in Songs” Double LP with gate fold cover a reality i will have this song re-recorded and produced by … let’s see. Let’s aim for the Blasting Room as a start.

    Razors (Stellwerk, Harburg, 17.06.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Alike the Razors blasted through their set, only Sven needed to take a minute out, his drumming corner was not only way too hot but also sans oxygen, as windows had to be kept shut as for noise protection. Great set by Hamburgs finest. Not more, not less.

With that it was time for the birthday boys (though they wisely choose not to play in their birthday suits), with Janny doing some tongue-in-check introductions. He apparently saw them as a 13 year old kid at a long defunct youth club in Harburg and went on to blame them that he got stuck on Punk.

    Conférencier Janny (Stellwerk, Harburg, 17.06.2023 (c) gehkacken.de)

Next to Youth Of Altona he should look out for a 2nd career – he is a funny entertainer!

Blanker Hohn, for this special occasion, did resort to an old trick currently being used by many old bands – playing entire albums in sequence of the record. So Set 1 was going to be their 2023 effort:

    Blanker Hohn – Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 17.06.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

That record is – according to my navigation chart – actually one of the better ones when it comes to “Deutsch Punk“. Starting with the cover (and the series that goes with it) and all the way to surprisingly crisp songs like this 11 Minute killer:

Blanker Hohn had a lot of family and friends in the audience and plenty of sing-a-long and dancing in front of the stage. On the not-so-positive side i wold recon that most of their fans still are from south of the river, only few from up north joined in.

    Blanker Hohn (Stellwerk, Harburg, 17.06.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

For my ears most of the new songs worked quite well, you can sense that their song writing and recording abilities improved by a long shot ever since they recorded their 1984 Long Player.

They have been around 1983 to 1986, topping it with support for Die Toten Hosen at the local Harburg youth center FZ Nöldekestraße in April 1984. A show that i saw and where my memory of Blanker Hohn is … mhhhh … let’s say “not impressed”.

Blanker Hohn burned like a small candle and burned out pretty fast, by 1986 they went on with their lives. They enjoyed a brief return from 2001 to 2004 but it took to 2018 to really get them back touring and recording.

Even the almighty AI (ChatGPT) has some doubts on brightness of that candle (AI, my ass):

Their 2nd Set was their 1984 LP, which stands out for one of the worst covers ever being put to print. And not really for the mu-sick if you ask me. But hindsight is always easy, what they did play and what they did record was fitting the days back then.

Here is one of these songs, in the stereo-typical western style that many added to their rooster back then under the moniker “Fun Punk“:

The No Fun part though is that this documents also the drunken loonie sitting on stage – few songs later he either collapsed or head crashed on the dance floor. As his situation looked not good the show was stopped, an ambulance was called and he was lifted out of the venue towards hospital. I hope he is well, asking around i was not able to establish that though.

Sad end to actually a neat show at the best location south of the river. Lets hope that Blanker Hohn can capitalize on their current record, they deserve it.

And because it is such a stark contrast – here are the two records side-by-side:

Blanker Hohn – Worst Cover 1984 vs. Inteligent Cover 2023

Rhetoric Question: Which would you choose? And more detailed record collector question: What what you choose from the used records bin“?

With that i took home on public transport, easy from the location – not so easy if you miss the train by seconds and got to wait 20 minutes on the platform with intoxicated youth heading for PAAARTY in the area you actually take residence in.

nb: There where fully happy consumers like Frank and Yvonne…

… and somewhat happy consumers like Andre and Thomas

    Somewhat happy? ( (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

nbb: Getting Die Toten Hosen to support them did not work out, the only thing they got was the poster design – well done!

  • … DIY with a loudmouth title: Hamburg Punkrock throws a first!

… DIY with a loudmouth title: Hamburg Punkrock throws a first!

Punkrock Hamburg has been a theme for many years for the Blackpool-Pilgrims to show off force and localism at Rebellion. In the last years it also has turned into a little FB community that allows people to share, participate and promote.

And in January 2019 it has also turned into a venture that hosts a first – the first ever Punkrock Hamburg Festival (aptly named “1st Punkrock Hamburg Festival in the world” in a bit of a loudmouth attitude (that actually pissed off some who saw the Adverts in 1978 and where present at the first Punk shows in Hamburg)).

First ever Punk Rock Hamburg Festival - A sold out not a sell out!
First ever Punk Rock Hamburg Festival – A sold out not a sell out!

And ahead of time it was actually sold out, though if you followed it on FB you could make out the gamble many venues and promoters are facing today:

The risks of trusting the internet generation!
The risks of trusting the internet generation!

At the ease of a finger move people are interested but in reality only few make an effort to get a ticket. Here it worked, also because it was a special location: The Stellwerk in the Harburg train station, south of the river Elbe – a rather grand room in the old station building.

Kick off was early and with Youth Of Altona and they do something special: They play only ever the Wipers songs they like, not the ones the audience would like to hear. From where i stand that is a very valid setting and if that is paired with mu-sick-al capability and some form of charm than it is valuable addition to entertainment.

Youth Of Altona (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

The most daring thing though was the guitar player, who played with some form of exoskeleton as he had a broken elbow. And that on the arm that moves the fingers up and down the length of the neck. Stunning that he was able to produce a clean guitar sound (as clean as it’s shiny acrylic glass body).

Great stuff but little movement on the rather small stage. But they got it right and they got the key item right: Wipers where not about speed and thus for some they played slow. I’ll say they played right.

Next local heroes Blanker Hohn. An outfit i believe i have seen only ever once in the early 80s, together with the then still small Toten Hosen at the FZ Nöldekestraße. I never tracked them, so missed their disbanding, re-union etc – but it seems they want to play again. How do they sound today? Check it out:

By and large they are to my ears rather painful and that is mainly because my ears never got to adjust themselves to what people refer to as Deutschpunk, specifically the class of 1984.

    Blanker Hohn (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

It just does not speak to me. What i did like though was the guitar, the guy could shred out some good chords. Still, local heroes with some songs on local themes though the words today just don’t work anymore (as all of them seem grown up men, fathers and lovers). I think they would benefit from creating something new. But who am i, their marketing director? Nope, just a listener!

The contrast to the next band on stage could not be bigger: Projekt Kotelett amassed 2 guitars, 2 singers, one bass and one drummer on the now really crammed stage. And they had one item that i always dig: They dressed for the occasion.

    Projekt Kotelett (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

All clad in some form of Deutsch and seeming to represent the unnamed Wutbürger. And with them came action, fun and loads of beer. On the musical side they blend in everything but ground themselves in fast rock (with scents of Glam, Punk and whatever).

Their advantage sure is the solid back line and the two singers, who allow for some versatile back-and-forth within a song and for at least some form of aggression. And putting the danger back into Punk it at least something many (including my humble self) appreciate.

They got applause and they got some dancing. And they drowned some beer. And more. An even more.

And that gave way to another stark contrast – where Projekt Kotelett where like Cabaret it was now for Nasser Hund to take the matters much more serious. As i missed their previous shows i was really keen to finally get to see – so i took at good look at the details to come.

    Nasser Hund - Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Nasser Hund – Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

And did they meet my rather high expectation? Oh yes, they did. No frills, no fills and no nonsense down to the bone music and great, heartwarming and to-the-point German lyrics. To find a comparison is actually tricky and any comparison would actually fall back onto those who are on stage and their history in so many bands.

That’s Kai on drums, Arne on bass and Jan on guitar. Whist i could brag about in how many different settings i saw them individually  i have to admit that in this setting it works stunningly great. And it also works that they let speak the music and the words rather then meeting my other fetish – stage uniforms.

    Nassser Hund (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

I loved them, many of the attendees loved them and they got a good level of appreciation (and even some drunken nutty dancing). If you ask me they are a force to come and you should definitely check them out. They even did throw in an encore – so listen up youth:

With that i am now super eager to get the news that they finally found someone who releases their fully recorded record on vinyl. It would be a pity if that takes the fate of the yet to be released Platzangst record (which turns into a myth every year it stays unreleased).

What beauties you can expect? For example this hard knocking A1 material:

Sie haben ihren Eltern niemals verziehen, sie lächeln nur auf Fotographien” – absolute great line and rhyme. If they go for crowdfunding i am in. Worth the effort!

Speaking of effort: Just check out the great backdrop the friendly people running this show created. It was actually funded by you and me (when buying Hamburg Punk Rock City T-Shirts from them) and we gotta be thankful to them!

    Coolest community backdrop ever!
    Coolest community backdrop ever!

If you need such a shirt then seek them out on FB!

And after a long evening, plenty of beer and plenty of chats with friends it was time for the mighty Razors. And they kicked off like this:

There is not a lot to add to that: They pretty much enjoyed the evening (and the other bands) and they where eager to close out the evening with the same level of joy.

    Razors (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

The new set list by now is in shape, mixing new songs with classics and obvious highlights like Heroes.

    Razors - Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Razors – Setlist (Stellwerk, Harburg, 09.02.2019 (c) gehkacken.de)

They almost rushed through their set, had everybody smiling and dancing and delivered the solid performance you would expect. And that, after all these years, as one of us in front of the stage.

Those who read here on a permanent basis most likely know that i am somewhat biased with them, still they simply deliver towards that agenda that get’s me out to shows and see bands live. And for that i love them.

Kick off at 19:30, final whistle after midnight, home in bed with a nice hangover and the best was to get the poor away game of FCSP on Friday out of me head. Mission accomplished.

Mission also accomplished for the good people that put this up: Sold out, all bands got their share and nobody was hurt and nothing was destroyed. I am not sure if they are in for a replay but i will sure lobby for it. Just the name for that little festival will need to be a bit less loudmouth.

Love you – you know who you are!
