    Benjamin Whitmer – Flucht (Polar Verlag, 2020)

    1968, in den Bergen von Colorado. Silvester. Ein Gefängnis und ein Ausbruch. Ein Schneesturm. Und eine gnadenlose Hatz mit nur einem Ziel: Hier kommt keiner lebend raus!

    Die Wärter wohnen in einer Stadt ohne Namen, das Gefängnis nennt sich “Old Lonesome Prision” und wird mit gnadenloser Hand vom einem gnadenlosem Arsch mit dem irren Namen Cyprus Jugg geführt.

    Seine Mitarbeiter sind durch die Bank durchgeknallte Irre, die ihre Seele entweder in Europa (Zweiter Weltkrieg), Korea (Koreakrieg) oder in Vietnam (Vietnamkrieg) verloren haben und froh sind anderen das Leben zur Hölle zu machen (damit sie ihre eigene Hölle ertragen).

    In einem endlosen Showdown in einem endlosen Schneesturm kommen dabei innerhalb von 15 Stunden nicht nur die Ausbrecher, sondern auch einige Kollateralschäden ums Leben. Unter anderem auch weil der Direktor großzügig Marschiertabletten aus Army-Beständen verteilt.

    Hart wie die Landschaft in den Rocky Mountains, gnadenlos und archaisch wie das US-Vollzugssystem. Da können auch zwei Journalisten nichts ändern, die sich der Menschenjagd anschließen.

    Mit hohem Tempo und mit viel Liebe zu Details (und wenigen, klaren Worten) nimmt uns Benjamin Whitmer mit auf die Hatz. Ein gutes Ende? Never. Ein Hoffnungsschimmer? Wird zerballert!

    Und das beste, mein persönliches Highlight: Frauen kommen in dem Buch nur am Rande vor …

    PS: Das ganze hat eine echtes Vorbild – 1947 sind am 30.12. zwölf Gefangene aus dem Staatsgefängnis in Canon City, Colorado, entflohen. Innerhalb einer Woche waren sie entweder tot oder wieder im Knast. Verfilmt wurde das ganze dann ehr schlecht … ich hoffe Whitmers Roman wird von einem besseren Regisseur verfilmt…

    For ages i have the “Stealworks” book of John Yates, detailing his great graphic work for eg. Alternative Tentacles. Much of my own graphical preferences have been driven by his simple yet convincing designs.

    John left AT a while ago and does freelance work and just for the fun of it he created the most likely best ever record cover re-design series. As he states in his own words: “A nod to Reid Miles and Francis Wolff and their amazing work at the Blue Note label, via a history of punk rock.“
