… ready for Punk Rock Raduno 2023!

Hamburg not only has the Rebellion Pilgrims but also the Punk Rock Raduno Pellegrini. And whilst good old Charlie Harper (meanwhile at a whopping age of 78) would go on to play for the Rebellion lot on Saturday at the Fabrik the weekend started actually with a double feature for the Raduno lot:

On Friday it was Randells (Sweden) and Travoltas (Dutchistan) at the Monkeys and on Saturday it would be the Puke Fest in Münster. And not only Hamburgs local heroes The Haermorrhoids would be there, also a number of those attending at the Monkeys (and a few more) would take the train down to Münster.

Kick off was with the Randells from sunny Blekinge County in Sweden and they set the scene tongue-in-check with a sing-a-long that i guess everybody in Germany can sing to (at least in my g-g-g-generation):

And here is the original, in best Beat Club Fashion:

Her eyes were exciting her hair was golden,
The lips were inviting, and my heart she's stolen!

And whilst at it, there is sure a German cover:

With such a setting them Randells already have won me over, even more upon realizing that they adhere to one of my favorite ground rules: Matching and/or orchestrated stage attire!

Like many others from Sweden who play in the oddly dubbed Pop Punk genre (and remember, the “Pop” in Pop-Mu-Sick stands for “Popular”) they throw in a healthy dose of America, Beach, Sun and Surf. Which yet again on my side at least makes click for the last three.

    Randells (Monkeys Music Club, Hamburg, 20.01.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

Their stage presentation was very structured, three songs, little break, next three songs. Between the songs just a few word to the audience, they where not really chatty.

And this is how it sounded, this is Cheese from their 2012 effort:

I liked them and the longer they played the more they won over the audience, as their songs are rather on the clever than simple side. They also seemed to build more confidence on stage and at at the end really had a big share of applause.

I would suggest you check them out, just go here! And, frank, sporting a Flying V Guitar out of genre wins me over at any time, anyway!

Next on my longest wait as i never had a chance to see them before, so this forever was my mental intro (hum away):

Responsible disclosure: I am a Travoltas devotee ever since this song was song #1 on my Playlist #1 (done back in 2000).

Their set list was immediately inspected by those in the know and positively comment with respect to the wide mix the songs originate from.

Travoltas – Setlist (Monkeys Music Club, Hamburg, 20.01.2023)

So this is how they kicked-off, One For The Road from Endless Summer (2002):

Bang – all the ingredients i was yearning for: Speed variations, harmony bridges, vocal bridges, choruses. Plus energy. Plus positive vibes. Yippieeeee!

It sure ain’t a surprise that as a consequence their songs are considerably longer than the normal Pop Punk stuff, just looking at the stuff of them i have on file it is on average 3:31 (and all of the other stuff in the genre hoovers around the 2:20 mark).

With 6 people on stage they almost exceeded the capacity of the Monkeys stage but that is what creates their unique and wide sound: Keyboard, two guitars, bass, drums and the singer (with a very wide vocal reach).

    Travoltas (Monkeys Music Club, Hamburg, 20.01.2023 (c) gehkacken.de 2023)

It is a clever and damn simple recipe in the end, normally put to simple words as “… an energetic mix of the Beach Boys and Ramones with a dash of The Cars“. And to be frank, this is straight down my road:

Whenever i get mellow and the harsh sounds from H/C and Oi! need some offset it is this little niche of sugar coated harmonies that makes me smile, happy and sing-a-long. But it does need some Ramonescore under the belt, else it is too much sugar to swallow.

They played quite long, got loads of cheers and towards the end topped it with an endless barrage of hits:

First a cover of Major Tom (a true timeless beauty hat has also been flawlessly covered by Face To Face), then followed by Pray For Sun from their glorious Teenbeat album (all the way from 2000):

Little secret: That chorus always cheers me up and is in my mind when i stroll Danish beaches with the love of me life…

Let me go to the shore
On the beach where we belong
    I always prayed for sun
There we go, don't say no
To the city by the bay
I know it will be home

But not without you, but not without you again, oh no
    I'm not going without you
    Please pray for sun

Next Waimea from Baja California (1997) only to return to another glorious sing-a-long from Teenbeat, that actually should have made it gold with any Radio Station serving a coastal area with sunny beaches:

Pacific Coast Highway, here we come!

Sing-a-long to that great chorus (that is also forever tied to my favorite shoreline on Jammerbugten):

And I will run to the ocean
I will run along the coastline
We'll be gone, no more worries
    On the never ending shore

And those two songs in an ever better setting, live at Punk Rock Raduno (the best little festival in the world), all the way back in 2017. And rumors have it that this year the Punk Rock Raduno Pellegrini might have it yet again:

It was a pity that the turnout at the Monkeys was more small then medium (and sure not sold out) but all present in front of the stage by this time had a smile (or a broad smile) and where moving. Those who knew them sang along, those who did not where positively surprised.

At the end plenty of cheers, plenty of applause and a two song encore. As far as i was concerned i was flat out happy, as far as my friends heading for Puke Fest where concerned they where looking forward for yet another dose of the Travoltas.

And those who where at Puke Fest came back with even bigger praise about a complete tear down of the sold out place:

Puke-Fest description as per their Facebook site: Annual Punk-Festival in Münster, Germany. 100% pure old-school pop-punk!

Their conclusion on this years edition: „Puke Fest 2023 was beyond all of our wildest dreams! What a night! Unbelievable!"

You could just leave it at that, but i got to go into a little more detail: It was a perfect one day festival exactly half way between Raduno(s).

Setting was inside the Sputnik Hall in a rather small club, completely sold out this year, so you don’t feel or think about the winter outside.

8 bands in 7 hours, with band #4, The Shivvies from Rotterdam, getting the party really started. Consisting of the Real Danger rhythm section plus the pop punk genius Marien Nicotine of Apers/Windowsill/Giant Eagles fame on guitar and vocals, they play their s/t hit by hit album almost in it’s entirety, closing off with the faster Ramones style tracks.

Very hard to follow now but next band up on stage were our hometown heroes: The Haermorrhoids!

And … they simply played their best ever show, people went absolutely ape shit, bodies flying around from the very start. They did not slip a thing, all go no slow, it just could not have gotten much better than this.

Can’t wait for their 2nd album, they should be HUGE, ideally releasing it on a label like Fat Wreck, ruling today‘s punk rock world beyond their current circle of influence!

Things calmed down just a little bit with the Randells, who seemed very happy and more confident than in Hamburg in front of that wild Puke Fest party crowd.

Perfect bubblegum beach punk, not unlike fellow swedes Psychotic Youth. Austrias No. 1 DeeCRACKS followed up with more hard hitting Ramones style punk.

And from midnight the headliners Travoltas rounded off a memorable night, that has set the bar very high for live shows this year, a real contender for „Best Show Of The Year“, as early as January.

Same as the Randells they really enjoyed playing to a full capacity, enthusiastic crowd, and delivered in perfect style. As if it needed another singalong after glorious hits like „Liv Tyler“ the Puke Fest crowd also got treated to Peter Schilling’s „Major Tom“: „…Völlig losgelöst von der Erde…“, nothing could describe the feeling of this night any better.

Now they only need to give us „Do The Gal-I-Gator“ next time they play, hopefully at Punk Rock Raduno this summer. Daan, je hebt het beloofd!.

Thanks to the Puke Fest crew to make this happen - the Hamburg/Kiel contingent was utmost happy!

See you at Punk Rock Raduno 2023!
    Frosch

Thanks to me mate Frosch for the summary and Kai Uwe and Kati for the pictures.

It is worth to note that since the Travoltas re-united they also face “long distance friendship” as their singer now resides in sunny Stockholm and runs a studio. Those interested in a wider mu-sick-al context might want to listen in:

In sum a great night that should have deserved more people in front of the stage and from where i stand a cemented love between Punk Rock Hamburg and the Travoltas (as visible on the tiles of the Monkeys loo).

    Punk Rock Hamburg ❤ Travoltas

My dream date anyway would still be: Giant Eagles, The Shivvies, The Windowsill and Travoltas as a Dutch Package, during Summer on the Hamburg harbor front or on a boat cruising the harbor. Can i dream? Anybody willing to make dreams come true?

  • … 2022 in numbers

    … 2022 in numbers

2022, the year the pandemie ended. True. But the grip on the live mu-sick circuit is still not gone – too many shows cancled or tours dropped. And my favorite clubs all lost regular customers and face reduced turn-outs. Damn.

At least i was able to see a bit more, but not as much as i liked:

    # of shows# of bandsaverange bands per show
    Hafenklang12282
    Monkeys3134
    Knust133
    MS Hedi111
    Indra111
    Drafthouse122
    Faust133
    Komet122
    21532.5

More than doubled compared to 2021 but still a lot of misses, be it a dropped show, be it me not choosing to go or simply a great event always when i do holiday (Get Lost Festival that is).

And the best? Now that is a tough one – there where evenigs of great entertainment and there where single big surprises. Let’s try:

On a lonely August evening The Bollokos from Guadeloupe did not bother about low turnout at the Indra but gave the few 2+ hours of joy! Thanks Sam! At the Monkeys it was both the return of Kaleko Urdangak and the surprise of Complete Loss during the MOi!n It’s Hamburg Festival that provided the utmost entertainment. The sets of Good Riddance, Youth Avoiders and Career Suicide at the Booze Cruise Festival where also near perfect.

But show of the year was the K-Town Warm-Up with both an unbeaten diverese line-up and a near perfect mangy delivery – an absolut perfect blast of hardcore energy. Runner up only by a short margin where Lysol and Electric Chair upstairs at the Hafenklang just a couple of days earlier in almost the same territory.

On the book front i somehow did not find the time to go digging in my favorite bookstores. As a consequence my consumption dropped:

    # of books# of pages#of days
    Crime4315.967285
    Music61.91591
    History31.37526
    SciFi21.24823
    5420.505

That is definitly less books read than 2021, also the average pages per day dropped dropped from 77 to 71. There where distractions, key one was a house move back into the city. I guess i will need to devote more time in 2023 again towards page turning.

The list is still topped by the Crime series of the Polar Verlag (12 books), followed by the stuff that Thomas Wörtche orchestrates for Suhrkamp (8 books).

Book of the year 2022? Not Crime per se but the Biography of Jerry A. Lang, the singer from Poison Idea. There is more than enough Drugs and Violence in those 3 books that it passes easily as Crime! Runner up from the real Crime Genre where Brachland, Blacktop Wasteland and Das Schnelle Leben. Extra shout out for Lightwood and Bobby March Forever, those books delivered some great laughter on top of a decent crime story.

And on the record front? Discogs tells me i added 54 records in 2022, so will go by that list:

Top 5, without any particular order:

Kinder Von Heute (Crazy) – great re-release of one of the finest Swizz Punk. Get it from Iffy at Static Shock (and get it like me even when you have the original one, it is worth it).

Intercity (Mess) – I took home the 2022 re-press straight from the show (together with all other Mess vinyl on offer). A raw beauty of UK82 all the way from Mexico. Get it from Mendeku Diskak.

Magnetic (Lucky Malice) – The vinly took two years to arrive (technically speaking the record was out in 2020 and i was lucky to get a signed edition. Great all-female Punk with stunning clever and to-the-point lyrics. A must have! Get it from Tonehjulet Kräftpest.

Barbies Don’t Bleed (Retrospective 1986 – 1990) (Barbie Army) – Many years ago i found “Take Down The Flag” on a tape someone gave me and ever since i was wandering if that band had any other songs out. Little did i know, little did i know. As some others had the same urge to get more everything came to light, but only in 2022. A gem of mid-80s girl Punk with a huge P like Pop and Melodies. Anything they ever recorded on this LP and 7″. Get it from Goodwill Records.

Vague Digitale (Sordid Ship) – Another French surprise and beauty, recorded in 2019 but only in 2022 released as single-sided 12″ with the backside being printed over. The 500 beauties are gone i understand, so get it digital from the band.

Whilst at it – this is one of the songs and it a sheer beauty!

Next to it i managed to get three more playlists completed, mixing new and old stuff. Just as a reminder, here they are – a whopping 541 Songs over 19 hours 34 minutes and 6 seconds:

  • … a diverse community that strives, a family!

… a diverse community that strives, a family!

14.0 got Covid, 14.1 got Covid too – luckily 14.2 was only ever infested with the will to have a community meet with good music at a great location. The stuff you most likely do not get on New Year, hence the anual family meeting is on the 30th of December and allows you pass by any New Years Eve parties on the final day of the year.

The Razors this time round invited friends from near (Degenerate Ideol from Bremen) and far (Östro 430 all the way from the early 1980s). And the icing that came with it: Diversity. Both on stage but also mu-sick-ally. Can there be a better setting?

Degenerate Idol kicked off early, at 20:00 sharp. Most of the lot was still en-route to the Knust i guess, so they had to face at least some space down in the audience. But it did not deter them, they took the stage with humor, wit and a sound deeply rooted in the R of Punk Rock.

    Degenerate Idol (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

Some of their songs were really funny and their singer is defintly stage aware (and able to control the crowd) but for my liking some of their songs lacked drive and from where i stood the sound lacked guitar force … but hey, as ever, that is down to my own mu-sick-al likings. They had some cheers, some dancing and a good reception. And remember, they are from Bremen. Check them out yerself.

Next the reborn Östro 430. Their original incarnation dates all the way back to Düsseldorf in 1979 and i guess they where the first German all-female Punk band. And in true punk fashion they gave a flying fuck on norms: No guitar and songs with a view from the female mind, heart and i guess cunt. A realy refreshing change of view and views, specifically on sexuality.

Fast forward to 2019 and Östro 430 where re-born in Hamburg, i guess Martina was living here anyway, with locals added on drums and bass. And off it went, actually pretty quickly pretty well (and well received too).

    Östro 430 (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

They kicked off Christmas themed and then thanks to Martina being herself (that is largely expressing herself in what we call in Hamburg Kodderschnauze) they delivered some clear messages.

Some of the messages – as back then – where actually too strong to handle by some in the audience, Martina made some pointed remarks towards the use of gender stars etc in language and that seemed to piss off some young punks in front of the stage. To much fun for myself they took it as an offence that need retaliation by leaving the pit. Oh my, sign of times…

    Östro 430 (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

Östro 430 where just great, proved that mu-sick works without a guitar (and with double bass, when needed) and that girls (both on and off stage) are to be heard and not only seen. I thoroughly loved it, my guest of the night from Rotterdam was thoroughly surprised by them. Well done girls! All of their stuff is now available, i do hope new stuff is added soonest!

It was then for the Razors to carry diversity forward, they did it by using the big stage of the Knust and Sir Edwar Elgars Pomp And Circumstances March Number One for a grand intro …

Don’t go away now! Sure the lot did not want to go anywhere, here at the Knust they were perfectly happy and more than inclined to enjoy both the community feel and the Razors delivering a complete wash-up of their Œuvre, spanning from 1978 to today.

    Razors (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

Whilst they did not have a lot of shows in 2022 they were well rehearsed and took it on like a well oiled old engine, with only a few selected replacement parts. Sven batters foward, Stoffel speeds, Christiane glues it and Klaus delivers it.

    Razors (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

And whilst there are fun moments (like this intro with one of the most famous Hamburg Punk nostalgia quotes) there are also loving memories, to those long gone but also to those whom we lost in 2022. For those it was We Love You, followed suit by 1977:

It is exactly this contrast (and that is song origin) and spread that i love the Razors for, being able to glue it all in a still relevant (aka modern) way and deliver it with all the energy they have – giving the audience a change to suck it up and sing it out loud in return. Just purrfect.

    Razors (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

I am not sure how much of the Razors repertoire (thsat is i guess around 50 songs) was used as time flew by without a single boring second and without a song that i could not sing-a-long to.

One of Klaus favorites all the way back from the time when Punk entered the scene was sure part of the set, here is their blistering delivery of Heroes.

    Now sing-a-long:

    I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that
Though nothing will keep us together
We could steal time just for one day
We can be heroes for ever and ever
    What d'you say?

I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes, just for one day

    I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day

    I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes, just for one day

    We can be Heroes
    We can be Heroes
    We can be Heroes
    Just for one day
    We can be Heroes

We're nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day

Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day

It is a song about togetherness and together the lot was. And as always there was no boundary on and off stage, as such the family took the stage for the final song and helped Klaus to sing it out loud: You Never Walk Alone.

    Razors Family (Knust, Hamburg, 30.12.2022 (c) gehkacken.de 2022)

I had a friend from Rotterdam over and me mate Frosch had a guest from Berlin, both noted that the community and/or family feel they sensed on the night was astonishing and something they do not see or feel back home. I guess they are right, Hamburg has something special going here and it is absoluty a joyful thing.

The joy ended in front of the DJ both over at the Bar, where Christian was doing his best adding sing-a-long and dance-a-long singles from back then and later too much appreaceation by the lot. I was home late, knackered. I kept the promise toward me love to help with early shopping but had to drop dead for another and much longer round of sleep.

Now it is 2023 already and i look forward to a new year with hopefully more shows and this Punk Rock Hamburg community even striving further. Keep the love, keep the memories and look forward.

Can i pencil in Burn Down The Baum 15.0 already? Yes? Great, luv it!
