This should have been written “the day after” but i had a decent hangover or, as my true love stated it:”you smell like a pub floor”…impossible. It was a great night out, together with a mate and having another mate in mind who is battleing in hospital. So to help him to get well soon and overcome the problems we had not only to sacrifice beer but also to worship one of the greatest true rock’n’roll bands of the world. The Supersuckers aka “Metal” Marty Chandler, Dan “Thunder” Bolton, Christopher “Chango” Von Streicher and Eddie Spaghetti himself graced Hamburg. It’s not punk, it’s not ska, it’s not hardcore it is simple high-energy rock’n’roll. And that is was – plenty of beer, some Jägermeister thanks to the landlord of the Knust and great music. It’s a simple receipe and fucking hell – it works!

And that is where it ended, no encore but a self reflection pic – here your are Mr. Spaghetti!

Sex Pistols Experience (Indra, Hamburg, 07.02.2014)
Sex Pistols Experience (Indra, Hamburg, 07.02.2014)

Flashback 14.01.1978 – the Sex Pistols grace the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and Mr. Rottern snears his famous “… ever got the feeling you’ve been cheated” to end not only the US of A tour of the Pistols but also the Pistols as such. Now zoom over to Hamburg where quite a lot of young kids that got hooked on Punk all stored a precious treasure at home: A ticket for the Sex Pistols show at the Markthalle in Hamburg – finally the prime punk band (at least according to the local german pop magazins) make it to Hamburg! Little did they know in the pre-internet days that it’ll be a “no show”…

Hop into your time machine now and move 13163 days fast forward – the oldpunks in Hamburg finaly get their chance to see a Pistols set (ok, those who make the yearly pilgrimage to Blackpool had a chance already plus those who travelled to London to see Rotten/Cook/Jones/Matlock on stage in 2007). But it ain’t the old farts, it is a travelling circus type of tribute/cover band. In any other case this would make me avoid the show like the plague but this lot has it. Has it realy. A young Sid mockup. A young Rotten lookalike with the same voice and the same starry eyes. A Steve Jones who looks like my old boss in London (and my boss was called by the name of … David C Jones!). And a handsome Cook on drums. And boy do they make a show! The packed Indra was completly taken away and i am sure a lot of wet dreams came true!

But see yourself and listen up:

    Satelite!

    Liar!

    EMI!

    God save the Queen!

Stunning! For some more pictures see below…

Some people found it rather odd that you get a 1:1 / chord-by-chord / snear-by-snear / look-by-look copy but take it as “our” ABBA musickal…

    Side remark:
Allthough the Pistols came to an end back there on the stage of the Winterland Ballroom greedy promoters sure tried to cash in on them and put them on the poster for the first “big” punk festival in Hamburg. More pictures from that event over at punkfoto.de!

  • No class reunion … school of 1983 revival?

No class reunion … school of 1983 revival?

Ob boy, what a neat evening! Generously marketed as “Waterkant Hits Revival” it was Mondial, X-Agenten, Platzangst, Channel Rats and Yakøpsæ gracing the Hafenklang. Indeed it felt like a “Class of 1983” revival at the “30 years” mark. Wow! it did throw endless memories about the early 80s and i’d say all of these where rather warm memories.

Now listen up and judge yourself if it was worth it!

Platzangst giving a nod to the Rejects!

Now this is typical 1981 Punk with simple fun.

And this is the one punk hymne on Hamburg – never been more “to date” then today where greedy money is eating up space for those who have little. This is the one and only true memory of the glory old days where we felt we can change the world. And, i am sure, we did. And do. Love it!

All in all a tight sound, fast paced and great sing-a-long – and the musical abilities much improved compared to the early 80’s!

That was a slightly new Channel Rats incarnation, with Bodo and Stickel on guitar and Der Lange (aus Bergedorf) on Bass. Also Pizza on drums was missing, but nevermind – 6 songs and even one new one! But sure “A night on the graveyard” is their instant classic but “Auf See” and “East End Party” are also true hits.
