… a professional rock band (from Calgary)

Ever since “Best hung carrot in the fridge” made it into my vinyl collection i dig Chixdiggit. They never claimed fame, they never claimed a particular standpoint other then putting forward some great tunes, hooks and sing-along-lines. The have graced Hamburg quite often and i think they never played to a particular large crowd – really strange. This time round  upstairs at the Hafenklang it was a mere 50 people that graced them…

Up first where Holly Would Surrender from Hamburg and their only purpose was … to supply Chixdiggit the back-line. In front of them a huge empty space most likely made them feel quite odd. I do not like their sound, for my liking too much a lightweight US “Pop Punk” copy of eg. Blink-182 but it must have been hard to be diminished that way. But, funny, they even had a groupie singing and filming along…

Chixdiggit came late, quickly set themselves up and …

Just smart, and indeed a professional rock band. And it went on and on, KJ just outsmarted the audience with lots of fun talking and engagement. Entertaining!

Time flies by, the audience decides on the songs (ok, more or less), KJ entertains us with the story of Stephanie, who actually did buy the first ever T-Shirt of the band back in Calgary and now lives in Hamburg (and serves good food at Mamalicous) and sure was in the audience. Tears everyone!

In the end they finished off with my fav hockey song, so i am all geared up for next week when i play hockey again (and hopefully get to avoid the puck and do not attract new stitch marks).

    Lovely weekday evening indeed.

And for those who do not dig hockey – here is Gerry Cheevers (a real hero in the rink)!

  • … Oi! Now that is a show…an awesome one indeed!

… Oi! Now that is a show…an awesome one indeed!

Now that is friday as neat as a friday could be: Fended off working all week in London and returned early on wednesday, finished early in home office on friday and off to the pub accross the street from the home ground. got to see a manic 2:2 (incl. lead and comeback) and hurried myself after the final whistle over to the Indra.

First on where On The Job from Karslkrona (that’s in beautiful southern Sweden) and they did their best to entertain an audience that clearly was out there to see Bishops Green, rather.

As such it was rather quiet during their set, only their own Karlskrona Bootboys made some noise…

But sometimes Chris was all alone out there on the front it felt.

And how does that sound? Listen up, Skinhead!

Next on Bishops Green, their records clearly got people enthusiastic and all geared up for the show, you could sense people deeply wanting them to be live as exiting as on vinyl.

And they kicked off taking no prisoners and being a great and tight 4 piece band and from the inital setting had all the street credibility posers never can obtain.

Was the crowd somehow reserved vs. our sevenska vänner it got fully erected upon Bishops Green…in the literal and visual sense…

They just have this little extra, the musically gifted and tight the back line provides the perfect backdrop for Greg Huff, who is a funny mix of a shy and nimble full frontal force singer bathing in the audience. Cool. Loved their show.

And hell, what an unpretentious stage entry! See and listen yerself!

    The Erotic Devices (Hafenklang 14.03.2014 (c) gehkacken.de )

Ramonescore from Berlin with a sweet young bassplayer that made some older women in the audience growing motherly instincts…not to bad but inovative it wasn’t. And the few people in the audience anyway wheren’t up for them it felt. Sorry Guys!

    Jam Today (Hafenklang 14.03.2014 (c) gehkacken.de)
    Jam Today (Hafenklang 14.03.2014 (c) gehkacken.de)

Followed suit by Hamburg’s one and only Jam Today, today sans suits and with added help from the Korg. A tight set, a birthday gift and loads of sing-a-long! We love it, you love and they love it – what else can you ask for?

    The Sect (Hafenklang 14.03.2014 (c) gehkacken.de)
    The Sect (Hafenklang 14.03.2014 (c) gehkacken.de)

Now that’s a return – the last time i saw The Sect was 1992 at the Zinnschmelze (the first club where Dirk Matzke was booking shows for a short period) with Noise Annoys and that was a fantastic show! They are back now and they tried to gain upfront credibility with Hamburg by wearing a Noise Annoys shirt on stage…ain’t that to easy? Their sound has been speeded up a wee bit (to the positive) but the soft edges are still there. Frank – i’d wish they would decide one way or the other, still they are somehow in nowhereland. So speed it up, harden it and keep the vocals: i would love it even more.

All-in-all a Friday like a Friday should be: Day off, out to the seaside with my love enjoying an early sun, getting god news that me mate is out of hospital and soon gets into rehab and finishing off with a show in one of my fav clubs. And yes, beer got into the equasion to. Can’t beat that setting!
