Pennsylvania. Da, wo die <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gehkacken.de\/?p=21481\">Winter hart sind<\/a><\/em> und die Menschen &#8230; h\u00e4rter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Story beginnt cool: Der Pastor der kleinen Gemeinde, Cap, hat mal wieder einen Kater, wenn die Gemeinde im Bett ist gibt es f\u00fcr ihn nur noch Erl\u00f6sung mit einer durchzechten Nacht. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Als er seine Kirche verl\u00e4sst, st\u00f6\u00dft er direkt vor der T\u00fcr auf einen Schwarm Kr\u00e4hen. W\u00e4hrend er versucht, die V\u00f6gel zu verscheuchen, erkennt er schlie\u00dflich, was sie verdeckt haben: die blutige Leiche eines gewaltsam zu Tode gekommenen Menschen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rewind 15 Tage: Black Walnut bereitet sich auf Ostern vor. Cap steckt tief in seiner st\u00e4ndigen Glaubenskrise, w\u00e4hrend seine Gemeindeschwester Robin gr\u00fcbelt, wie sie ihren gewaltt\u00e4tigen, trunks\u00fcchtigen Ehemann dazu bewegen kann, der drei kleinen Kinder zuliebe einen Job anzunehmen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maggie, die ehrenamtliche Organisatorin der Osterparade, hat ebenfalls Eheprobleme, und ihr Sohn Butch wird in der Middle School gemobbt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Auftritt Tess, eine geh\u00f6rlose Frau von ausw\u00e4rts, die zu der \u00dcberzeugung gelangt ist, dass sie ihren Problemen nur durch den Tod entkommen kann. Und von Cap zumindest physisch aus ihrem Auto gerettet wird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samuel W. Gailey seziert die Beziehungen, packt noch mehr Kleinstadtstress dazu und besch\u00e4ftigt den Leser mit dem &#8220;warum&#8221;. Ziemlich cool \u00fcbergeht er dabei die entscheidende Frage: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wer wird am Ende tot vor Caps Kirche liegen \u2013 und wer ist der M\u00f6rder?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spannung auf ganz andere Art und getragen durch einen starken (und stillen) Charakter: Tess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samuel W. Gailey sagt dazu in einem <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebigthrill.org\/2022\/12\/come-away-from-her-by-samuel-w-gailey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interview<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The challenge in the book became its best opportunity. Tess, my female protagonist, is deaf. At the beginning of the story, I wanted to find a unique way to demonstrate Tess\u2019s loss of power and how little voice she has in the acts of violence that are committed against her. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>At the same time, I wanted to take what can be perceived as a weakness or flaw and show how it actually makes Tess special and empowers her. Before making her deaf and mute, I struggled with her needs versus wants, her backstory, her physicality, and her voice. How she actually spoke and the things she might say. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Once I removed her literal voice, she blossomed into a character with grit and tremendous inner strength. Silence became her power.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unten drunter schlummert aber auch eine Frage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menschen, die den Wert von Liebe, Mitgef\u00fchl und Gemeinschaft erkennen und hochhalten &#8211; k\u00f6nnen sie einander verzeihen, wenn Grausamkeit sie zu verzweifelten Reaktionen treibt? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klasse, aber nicht in einem Rutsch zu lesen. Die Art wie Samuel W.
